RoSPA is committed to preventing accidents, all the while seeking to strike the right balance between prescription and individual choice.
A quest for "absolute safety" in all areas of life is not feasible and would come at a cost to freedom. Weighing up a risk against the potential intervention to reduce it is one way of striking this balance, as is considering the effect of risk-taking on other people.
At the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), our mission is to save lives and reduce injuries.
A key RoSPA principle is that life, particularly our leisure time, should be as safe as necessary, not as safe as possible. This means that unless risks are intolerable, good accident prevention is about enabling them to be managed safely, rather than banning activities altogether.
At RoSPA, we aim to bring about change and help others, including our much-valued members, to prevent accidents by promoting key issues and providing services which are relevant. Our varied activities include campaigning, collecting data, carrying out research, developing policies, informing and educating, auditing and providing expert consultancy.
Our Current Campaigns
These are just some of the campaigns with which RoSPA has been or is currently involved:
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has a long history of successful campaigning on issues which have the potential to save lives and reduce injuries. From awareness campaigns which highlight how people are killed and injured in accidents and how such accidents can be prevented, to calling for legislative change, RoSPA is committed to speaking up for safety. See our Heritage Timeline for more campaigning successes.
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents was established almost 100 years ago and is a registered charity (Registered Charity No: 207823) whose patron is Her Majesty the Queen. Our aim is to campaign for change, influence opinion, contribute to debate, educate and inform - for the good of all.
Donate to RoSPA and help us fulfil our mission to save lives and reduce injuries.
By providing information, advice, resources and training, RoSPA is actively involved in the promotion of safety and the prevention of accidents in all areas of life - at work, in the home, on the roads, in schools, at leisure and on (or near) water. If you're interested in donating to RoSPA visit our Donations and Sponsorship section.
By donating to RoSPA you are showing a clear commitment to making life safer for all individuals in our society. Our mission to "save lives and reduce injuries" describes our passion, our belief in our cause and our energy and commitment to improving the lives of others. Too many people are killed and seriously injured in preventable accidents. At RoSPA, we remember that every accident "statistic" represents a real person - a life lost or affected, often severely - and a family left enduring the consequences. By donating to RoSPA you will help us succeed in our vision "to lead the way on accident prevention".
