Work injury Accident Rates for Employees from RIDDOR and the Labour Force Survey

The table below shows all reported non fatal injury rates for employees in work activities as classified using the Standard Industrial Classification 2007. (SIC2007)

For a list of the SIC 2007 codes/descriptions please see the PDF document marked indexes at SIC 2007

The Labour Force Survey (LFS)

Please note the following in relation to the data for the work sectors shown:

  • Agriculture (PDF 76kb). Results from the LFS suggest that around half of reportable non-fatal injuries are recorded under RIDDOR, but that the level for agriculture, forestry and fishing is lower than this.
  • Construction (PDF 79kb). Results from the LFS suggest that around half of reportable non-fatal injuries are recorded under RIDDOR, but that the level for construction is lower than this.
  • Human Health and Social Work (PDF 88kb). Results from the LFS suggest that around half of reportable injuries are recorded under RIDDOR, the level for human health and social work is similar to this.
  • Manufacturing (PDF 124kb). Results from the LFS suggest that around half of reportable non-fatal injuries are recorded under RIDDOR, but that the level for manufacturing is higher than this.

NOTES:

p = Provisional
(a) Excludes sea fishing.
(b) Injuries arising from shore-based services only. Excludes incidents reported under merchant shipping legislation.

*Sample numbers too small to calculate a reliable rate of injury.

Figures in italics re estimates based on less than 30 sample cases.

NB Figures shown in brackets are 'headline rates' for a group of work activities. Where available, estimates are given for individual work activities within the group, but where they are not, the headline rate must not be regarded as accurate for a specific activity because reporting rates may vary considerably within the headline group.

Source: RIDDOR - Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 1995

Where rates of injury are available and shown they have been calculated using the Annual Population Survey (APS) as the source of employment data. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the provider of this data. The analysis and interpretation of these data are the sole responsibility of HSE. For more information please go to: http://www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/sources.htm#employment

Over 3-day absence injuries include those sustained as a result of non-road traffic accidents, leading to more than three consecutive (working and non-working) days away from work (not counting the day the accident happened).

The breakdown by industry section for 2008/09 onwards is not entirely consistent with those of previous years.

This is because:
(i) the LFS data was coded directly to SIC92 for years up to 2008/09 and then mapped to the new industrial classification, SIC2007, according to the assumed relationship between the two classifications;
(ii) data from 2008/09 onwards has been coded directly to SIC2007; and
(iii) a new method of coding industry data, using an automatic tool, was introduced with the new classification.

Care should be taken when analysing results over time as these and other changes have an effect on some of the results by industry section.

A full explanation of the implementation of SIC 2007 and the impacts on the LFS can be found on the ONS website in the LFS User Guide – Volume 3

Within industry sections, more detailed industry information has been provided where some of the categories have sufficiently large sample cases to provide reliable estimates. # Includes those who did not answer the question identifying the job in which their injury was sustained and those who said their injury was sustained in a job other than their current or most recent in the last 12 months.
