It was with great sadness that I heard of the very sudden death of John Howard. In my capacity as Vice Chair of the National Safety Education Committee and on behalf of West Sussex County Council I wish to extend my condolences to all who knew and worked with John. His contribution to promoting and achieving more effective safety in this country and further afield was vital and considerable. Personally I will always remember John for his kindness and his enthusiastic leadership of the safety agenda. He has enabled the campaign for more effective approaches to safety education in this country to be maintained and I know that the committee of which I am Vice Chair will wish to continue this work in order that John's legacy can continue to grow.

I heard the sad news via a ROSPA bulletin I received this morning. It goes without saying that I and my colleagues within the MOD are shocked and deeply saddened by the news! I have passed the message on to all of those within the MOD that I know will have met John or had dealings with him.
John has contributed so much and leaves behind him a lasting legacy befitting a man who has dedicated so much of his life to the cause of road and work related safety. I always found him to be so such a charming man.
I think I can speak for all within the MOD when I say that I am confident that Errol and the team will take forward the superb work the John has done and build on his many successes.
My sincere condolences, and those of the MOD, go to you all at ROSPA and to Johns family. Such a loss to us all!

John and I were planning to travel to London on the 12th July after the terrorist attacks. His last words to me were: "I don't feel well enough to go tomorrow but do take a taxi to avoid travelling on the Underground". How thoughtful.

I was shocked to hear from Kevin Clinton this morning the news about John. He was always a good friend of CAPT's and I am sure that the healthy working relationship that exists between our organisations was down to John's dedication to the subject and his recognition of our shared aims and difficulties.
On behalf of everyone at CAPT, please pass our condolences to our friends at RoSPA at what must be a very sad time.

I am with John today and we both felt the need to write and express our great sadness on hearing the news that John passed away last Friday. John recently attended the Lifeskills AGM where the opportunity was taken to talk at length with him both in a professional capacity and socially too. He was in great spirits and as always took time to mix with Members and contribute to the proceedings. As you know we have worked with John for over 15 years and have regarded him not only as a Mentor and Expert in the field of Safety but also as a personal friend and valued colleague.
At this early stage of hearing the news could we please ask that you pass on our condolences to whoever you consider appropriate. We would also like to write formally to a named contact if you would be kind enough to let us know who that may be. Our work with John in partnership with RoSPA has been not only for us as Delegates, Speakers and Chair at National RoSPA Congress but also with the South West Home and Leisure Safety Council, Avonsafe and most recently of course as a Patron of Lifeskills and with the support that John gave to the National Safety Centres Alliance. Without his constant pressure on the DoH we may have never secured the funding for the vital post of LASER Coordinator.
John's expertise in his role as Chief Executive of RoSPA was greatly valued by so many. His very personal style of management and communication will be missed be all those that knew and worked with him.
Our sympathy to you and your colleagues.

I am writing on behalf of the Royal Yachting Association to express our sadness at the sudden death of John Howard.
The RYA knows only too well the shock and sorrow of losing a Chief Executive following a short illness, we faced the same situation five years ago.
John was a pragmatist, he understood that the RYA deals with a risk activity and that our task is to manage that risk rather than try to eliminate it. He also understood that legislation is not always the solution to a safety problem.
A listener as well as a man of clear views, he was good company and he will be greatly missed.
Please convey the condolences and sympathy of the RYA to his family and also to the staff of RoSPA.
With best wishes,
James Stevens
Training Manager

What a great shock for the family and all colleagues of John! He was such a nice character and so in the midst of his career, being recently appointed as general director of RoSPA. On behalf of all his colleagues here in the Consumer Safety Institute and all colleagues on the European continent, I carry our condolences over to you and your colleagues.
I wish you all strength over the coming period, and be assured of our help and support when ever needed.
In all sadness my warmest regards,
Wim Rogmans

I was shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely death of John Howard. In my time at RoSPA I found John to be approachable at all times and honourable in all he did. He was a great ambassador for RoSPA and he truly believed in the RoSPA mission, perhaps more so than any other individual.
John committed a large part of his life to RoSPA and I know that he was immensely proud of the things that were achieved by the staff there. I also know he will be sadly missed, both by the people at RoSPA and by the society itself.
I would like to pass on my deepest condolences at this immensely sad time. My thoughts and prayers will be with John's family and friends, and with all of you as we all try to come to terms with the tragic news.

I was much saddened to hear of John's untimely death. He made a substantial contribution to the development and focus of RoSPA. He was also a really good person to know, who was able to combine gravitas with an engaging personality. I will miss him.
