With so many unanswered questions no organisation, however outstanding, can afford not to review their corporate governance of health and safety. Directors need to be able to show that they have taken all reasonable steps to manage risks, and have effective health and safety management systems in place, including arrangements for involving their workforce.

In the decade it has taken to secure the introduction of the new offence of Corporate Manslaughter (CM), there has been a growing focus on the health and safety responsibilities of directors and senior managers in all organisations.

It is essential that as a board director or senior manager you have the strategic vision to view health and safety as:

  • A board level corporate performance issue
  • An important dimension of your Corporate Social Responsibility Strategy
  • An integral aspect of your corporate governance risk policy
  • A key parameter on which you report openly to your stakeholders and ensure involvement with your work force
  • An essential part of continuous improvement to achieve business success.

To help you manage your strategic health and safety responsibilities we have developed a range of specialist directors' consultancy and training services.

Other Relevant Training Courses:

RoSPA also have a number of workplace resources available for Directors and Senior Managers further supporting health and safety excellence, these are available for purchase in the RoSPA Web Shop.

RoSPA are delighted to recommend the following courses which may be useful for Directors or Senior Managers, and give them the tools and techniques to aid continuous organisational improvement:

Behavioural Safety

The course details the key theories relating to effective behaviour management, the principles of measuring performance and the ways in which to create a successful behaviour change process.

Best Practice in Risk Assessment

This new course, available in company only, structured around Annexe E of BS8800:2004, encourages delegates to adopt a systems approach to managing safely, identifying risk assessment as a key technique in planning and implementing effective risk control. The programme gives delegates the confidence that their approach is correct, as on return to the workplace delegates undertake an assessment of a specific risk and submit it to RoSPA for verification.
