SAFED Course (Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving)
The Government initiated SAFED in 2003 in order to improve driver safety and reduce fatalities whilst on the road as well as introducing fuel-saving benefits to organisations. SAFED aims to improve the driving skills of van drivers, making them safer and more fuel efficient.
RoSPA is now a SAFED-approved centre, offering a half day course to improve driving skills whilst reducing your carbon footprint, and fuel and accident costs.
Course Summary
- Delegates will learn to become less stressed and over-all safer drivers
- They will develop a more environmentally friendly way of driving, so that fuel consumption is reduced by up to 10%.
- Improved driving techniques to include better use of gears, keeping correct distances to reduce braking and raising awareness to improve fuel economy and road layout.
Although this course is for van drivers, the skills can be adapted for use in private vehicles and cars using our Eco Driving Course.

Course objectives
The aim of this course is to improve the skills of the driver making them safer and more fuel efficient.
Delegates will:
- Learn less stressful driving techniques
- Learn fuel-efficient driving techniques
- Decrease their chances of being involved in an accident
Who should attend?
Anyone who drives a van for work purposes, or who is interested in reducing their carbon footprint/fuel costs.
All delegates should be familiar with the latest edition of the Highway Code.
Additional information
Although the SAFED initiative is only currently applicable to vans, RoSPA can offer the Eco-Driving Course to drivers of other vehicle types.
This course is available at the RoSPA Training Centre in Birmingham, or can be conducted at customers’ premises.
