Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. How soon after taking your learner driving or riding test can you sit your RoSPA Advanced Driving/Riding Test?
A1. Because this is an advanced test, RoSPA recommends that you wait a reasonable amount of time before taking your Advanced Test since you do most of your learning on the road when you are fully qualified to drive. For most people we would recommend about two years, although different individuals obviously learn faster or slower than others. It is up to you, but the RoADA Groups all over the country are in the best position to advise you on whether you are ready or not to sit your test. It is not easy, it is an advanced test after all, and only the best drivers or riders attain the high standard of a Gold Grade.

Q2. How much do the advanced driving lessons cost?
A2. The RoSPA Advanced Drivers Association (RoADA) has local groups all over the country who deliver support and tuition in preparation for the Advanced Driving/Riding Test. This is run on voluntary basis, the instructors are usually retired or serving police officers who offer their services in their spare time to promote a better standard or driving across the UK. This means that you do not pay for your tuition on a lesson-by-lesson basis but rather pay a nominal fee to join your local group and make a contribution to petrol costs if necessary. The fee to join your local group varies from group to group but is usually somewhere around the £30 mark.

Q3. If we put someone through the Driver Assessor course does that mean they are qualified to train our drivers?
A3. No. It means that they are qualified to carry out in-house driving assessments in order to assess who needs further training. It is important to stress that this qualification only allows the delegate to conduct driving assessments within their organisation. The only course in which RoSPA trains the trainers is the National Diploma in Advanced Driving/Riding Instruction.

Q4. Are there any discounts available for fleet training?
A4. If you are booking a large number of training courses for your organisation then there is a discount. The Driver and Fleet Solutions team are happy to discuss your requirements, any budget restrictions you may have, etc. in order to offer you the best value package for your organisation. RoSPA can also offer a further 9% discount to organisations who are members of RoSPA; to discuss RoSPA membership further please email Donna Grady on dgrady@rospa.com

Q5. How far in advance of a course taking place should we be making the booking?
A5. Ideally our Training Co-Ordinator, Thrina Markham, likes to have an interval of one month between booking the course and it taking place. This allows her the time to ring around and find the trainer nearest to you so that you do not have the added expense of travel costs and accommodation. However, we will try our best to accommodate your needs if you require training at short notice.

Q6. Where are the courses held?
A6. Most courses can be conducted at the customer’s premises but please check the course details to make sure that this is the case.

Q7. Do we use our own vehicles or RoSPA vehicles for driver training?
A7. Delegates’ company vehicles are used for training, as these will be the vehicles they will be using once the training is complete. It is important that our trainers/examiners assess the individual’s skill and ability in a vehicle they are familiar with so that delegate’s get maximum benefit from their training session. It is important to note that you should make sure that you have taken out adequate insurance cover for RoSPA trainers to drive the vehicles.

Q8. What charges are incurred by the cancellation of a course?
A8. Because all of our trainers are self-employed they work for a variety of driver training organisations, and if we book their time this means they have to refuse other work. Since we still have to pay the trainer for his/her time if we cancel at short notice, we have to implement cancellation charges for any courses cancelled or transferred by the customer. There is no charge if you give more than 28 working days notice, there is a 50% of the course fee cancellation charge if you give 14-28 working days notice, and a 100% cancellation charge if you give less than 14 working days notice. RoSPA reserves the right to cancel or alter the dates of provision of service, the venue and the individual providing the service.

Q9. I’ve looked through your list of courses but nothing seems to quite meet my requirements…
A9. That’s not a problem, RoSPA offers a bespoke service, so to speak. We can take elements of one course and combine them with another in order to meet your needs, we have provided many organisations with this service in the past. All you would need to do is have a telephone consultation free of charge with one of the Driver and Fleet Solutions team in order for them to gauge your requirements, then they would send you a proposal outlining the tailor-made course for you and the price. It’s as simple as that!
