RoSPA's Award Winning Driver Risk Assessment Software

Driver Profiler has recently won two awards. The first was presented to The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents by the British Safety Industry Federation, one of only five winners awarded for Product Innovation in 2005. More recently RoSPA's driver Profiler was named the Innovative Road Safety Product of the Year at the Highways Magazine Excellence Awards in November 2006.

“For the majority of people the most dangerous thing they do while at work is drive on the public highway” (HSE 1996)

This assessment has been developed in partnership with BT in order to give organisations a better idea of their employees’ strengths and weaknesses when driving: it is not a test. The results allow employers to deliver an appropriate level of training to each individual if required, so it is vital that employees answer the questions as honestly as possible. The benefits of such training will be considerable: to the organisation in the first instance, but more importantly for the employee and his/her family.

This assessment consists of 25 web pages split into two sections: the first asks the employee to enter some personal details (name, age, gender, etc.); the second consists of a series of 98 statements* regarding driving behaviour and attitudes whereby employees have to decide to what extent each statement applies to them. It is important to stress that any characteristics or traits picked out during this assessment refer purely to driving attitudes and behaviours and not those displayed in everyday life. It should take no longer than 30 minutes to complete the assessment.

The statements are presented in this format with these options as responses. The statements are presented in this format with these options as responses.

Employees simply click on their choice of answer and this is recorded. At the end of the assessment each employee will have a separate score for the eight different traits being measured: aggression, alertness, stress, dislike of driving, anticipation, attention, violation, and error. There is also another scale, the lie scale, which tests whether employees are answering honestly, or whether they are just giving the answers the tester wants to see.

These scores will be translated into a written report stating whether the employee is categorised as high, medium or low risk on any given trait. This will be accompanied by a short paragraph explaining what this score means in terms of driving behaviour and attitude, and whether any further training is recommended. The final report is automatically emailed to the individual (Example report - Click here to download this document in PDF format. PDF format 45kb), while the manager is sent a spreadsheet of the results (Example spreadsheet - Click here to download this document in PDF format. PDF format 56kb) for all employees who have completed the assessment making it easy to see at a glance how individuals are performing. These results can be used to book groups of people who demonstrate the same particular weakness on a tailor-made course that specifically addresses the issues raised by the Driver Profiler.

The information given in the completed assessment is confidential and should be subject to an organisation’s in-house Human Resources (HR) procedures.

RoSPA's Driver Risk Assessment SoftwareThis programme will be available online through the RoSPA website on a licensed “pay-per-use” basis at a cost of £15 per head. Once an organisation has booked a certain number of assessments they will be assigned a User Licence Number for their employees, and it is up to the manager to assign a Personal Reference ID (PRI) for each employee. These PRI’s should not exceed the number of assessments ordered and the HR manager or whoever ordered the assessments should be the only person who knows which PRI corresponds to which employee. This is because other people may access the results stored in the central database. For instance, you may tell your employees to use their payroll number, as this is confidential and unique to each employee.

The line manager will be sent an email when the employees have completed 80% of the assessments assigned to that particular organisation, warning him/her that they may wish to purchase more. The licence will terminate a year from the date on which the assessments are booked.

And there is also a paper version of the assessment available for those organisations whose employees do not have access to the Internet. All you would need to have is an admin officer to input the responses as they come in so that the accuracy of the scoring behind the assessment is not compromised in any way.

Booking the assessments is a very simple procedure whereby you contact RoSPA Driver & Fleet Solutions on 0121 248 2084 and let us know your details such as the company name, your email address for alerts and reports, and the number of assessments you require. You may choose to pay upfront or be sent an invoice. As soon as payment has been received you will be able to go online and start completing the assessments.

It is anticipated that such an assessment will bring considerable financial benefits to an organisation in terms of training costs and employee down time, as this is less costly than putting individuals in vehicles and should take less than half an hour to complete. This assessment will identify individuals who are most at risk on the road and an appropriate training package will be suggested accordingly to address that risk and make the road a safer place for your employees and other road users. Focussed training rather than a broad-brush approach is the key to a successful training programme for any 21st century organisation.

“Driver training works. Statistics from insurance companies, government departments, car manufacturers and fleet customers prove accident rates drop by at least 25% after initial training.”

* These statements were developed through the driving behaviour research carried out by Manchester University and Aston University.
