PAUL COLLINS BSc
While at Staffordshire University in 1999/2000 Paul chose to do his final year dissertation on a particularly hot topic of that time, mobile phone use while driving. In researching this, he had his first contact with RoSPA, using the extensive Library and On-Line sources to help him complete his dissertation entitled ‘Attitudes and Beliefs Towards Types of Mobile Phone Use While Driving’.
After Graduating Paul worked as an Account Manager in London before returning to Birmingham where he worked in the Financial Sector. Through various jobs both temporary and permanent Paul has gained a broad understanding of different industries and companies. This has enabled him to draw on these experiences in his role as an Occupational Health and Safety Consultant.
Paul first joined RoSPA in 2005 as a Business Development Manager and had great success in this role, helping RoSPA to achieve record levels in their Training and Consultancy Courses before adapting this first-hand health and safety industry experience to his new role as an Occupational Health and Safety Consultant. Paul is currently undertaking NEBOSH and City & Guilds Training and is focusing on the psychological training courses for RoSPA, especially Managing Stress, Violence and Behavioural Safety.

DAVE SMITH
Hi my name is Dave Smith and I am the Commercial Training Manager within the West Midlands Fire Service. I joined the West Midlands Fire Service way back in 1979, Prior to that I worked in the Construction Industry on many building sites in and around the Midlands. During my time in the Fire Service I have served on several stations around the Birmingham area, some of my fondest memories are from the 12 years I served at Highgate Fire Station, a very busy station with regard to fires and other incidents were I learned my trade as a firefighter. I continued my career gaining promotion and experience along the way with a total of 21 years operational service at one station or another. In 2000 I transferred to the Commercial and Industrial Training Unit and started teaching fire safety to the general public. For a number of years now Fire Authorities have realized that prevention is better than cure and this is why fire deaths and injuries have fallen year after year. My department is responsible for training companies in all aspects of fire safety including Fire Risk Assessment, Fire Legislation, Fire Evacuation, Fire Management etc. I am of the firm belief that education is the key to creating a safer environment for us all. One of the most important factors in any company is the role that management have to play and how they manage the day-to-day fire safety procedures. This is one of the topics I will be talking about at the meeting so I hope to see you all there.
