On the 26th November 2008 the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives in association with RoSPA gave over 100 HR professionals the opportunity to gain FREE advice and guidance from leading experts on how to manage their risk and protect their employees.
The aim of the event was to help Scottish Businesses protect themselves and their employees from the biggest single safety at work issue while highlighting the legal, safety and business cases for action.

ROBERT ATKINSON
Robert Atkinson is the Occupational Health and Safety Development Manager for the Scottish Centre for Healthy Working Lives. Robert was previously a Regional Co-ordinator and then National Co-ordinator for the Safe and Healthy Working service, which is now incorporated into the range of services offered by the Scottish Centre. His role involves the continued development of free Occupational Health and Safety services and advice to small and medium sized organisations in Scotland through an advice line, website and a team of Advisers. Roberts’s main focus is currently on developing projects and partnership activities which will become main stream functions and services for HWL in the future. Robert has worked on the National Advice line and as an Adviser with the service.
Robert is a Chartered Member of IOSH, with fifteen years experience in Occupational Health and Safety. Previously Robert has worked for British Aerospace, the National Health Service, (where he jointly developed the Lanarkshire Workplace Assessment Service – a collaborative approach to workplace safety and health promotion - a forerunner to Healthy Working Lives), The National Trust for Scotland and Salus Occupational Health and Safety.
KEVIN CLINTON
Kevin Clinton is the Road Safety Adviser at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
He joined RoSPA in 1989 as National Cycling Officer, being responsible for RoSPA’s cycle safety policies, resources and activities. Over time his remit broadened to include pedestrian and motorcycle safety. In March 2001, he became the Road Safety Adviser at RoSPA, assuming responsibility for all RoSPA road safety activities, policies and services.
Kevin is an Honorary Fellow of the Institute of Road Safety Officers, and a member of the Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers.
He represents RoSPA on the DfT’s Road Safety Advisory Panel and on a range of other bodies.
Kevin has produced a wide range of educational and promotional resources on various road safety issues. In partnership with Working Groups, Kevin has written and produced Good Practice Guidelines on several road safety activities.
JON COWLAN
Jon is a health & safety consultant in the Regulatory Team based in Glasgow and provides non contentious legal health & safety services across the UK. His experience encompasses strategic safety management, training, due diligence, CDM / construction, project safety and accident investigation. He also specialises in providing support to Lawyers when dealing with the investigation of fatalities.
He has worked in industry, local government and consultancy and is a member of the Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) International & Communications Committee. As well as being a qualified engineer and Chartered safety professional, he is also qualified in food hygiene.
ALISTAIR LEWIS
Alistair has completed 28 years police service, this includes 18 years in Road Policing, being promoted to sergeant in 2001. Alistair is a trained Senior Investigation Officer for road deaths and a Family Liaison officer.
DR KAREN E MCDONNELL
A chartered Fellow of IOSH, Karen is responsible for the management of activities’ linked to the delivery of RoSPA’s mission ‘to save lives and reduce injuries’ within Scotland. This is achieved through influencing policy via the promotion of RoSPA key issues such as the Management of Occupational Road Risk within a Scottish context, and the provision of support services including Training and Consultancy Services, including IOSH and NEBOSH programme’s to meet client needs within Scotland and the North of England.
As Head of Portfolio Development she is also responsible for the design, development, presentation and co-ordination of a range of published and tailored courses held at RoSPA training locations or at other venues specified by clients.
Karen has many years experience of both direct delivery and development of training programmes to meet the needs of a broad array of clients across industrial/commercial sectors.
A firm believer in CPD and expanding understanding of Health, Safety and the Environment in the broadest context she has successfully undertaken the Heriot-Watt University Centre for Continuing Education, Workplace Health (on-line) programme, the IEMA open book examinations and a Masters in Safety Promotion through the Karolinska Institute Sweden. Currently undertaking an Open University Mentoring programme to assist IOSH members to progress to Chartered status.
Also acts as Chairperson of IOSH Forth & Tay District of Edinburgh Branch and represents Professional Organisation’s in Occupational Safety and Health (POOSH) Scotland on the Partnership on Health and Safety in Scotland.
IAN MURDOCH
Ian is the Scottish Transport Manager at the Energy Saving Trust (EST) and has fulfilled that role since June 2002. He works closely with the Scottish Government to promote the development a number of sustainable transport initiatives. In doing so he has worked with a number of local authorities, businesses, schools and fleet owners and operators.
In previous roles Ian worked in the then Scottish Executive’s Scottish Energy Efficiency Office helping a number of companies and other organisations gain the benefits from the energy efficiency and waste minimisation initiatives that his office promoted. He also served in other departments dealing with a range of issues including Sustainable Development delivery and sponsorship of non-government organisations.
PAUL RICHARDSON
Paul has been involved in the promotion of road safety for over 28 years. His career began in the late 1970’s in road safety research at the Transport Operations Research Group, at the University of Newcastle University looking at driver behaviour and also the effectiveness of area wide low cost accident remedial measures.
In 1983, Paul moved to Scotland and took up the post of road safety officer with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents and then as the society’s Road Safety Manager in Scotland. This was followed by 18 years within the Scottish Police Service as the manager of road safety units, first with Fife Constabulary and latterly with Lothian and Borders Police.
Paul is currently the Community Safety Officer for Scottish Borders Council.
During his career he has held the various positions, Secretary of the Scottish Accident Prevention Council, Chairman of the Publicity and Education Sub committee’s of Road Safety Scotland. During his time with Lothian & Borders Police Paul was actively involved in the development and promotion of the forces Fleetsure scheme to encourage local organisations to manage at work road safety.
For 18 years he was actively involved in the promotion of advanced driving in Edinburgh holding at various times the positions of Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer of the local RoSPA Advanced Driving Group.
