What is the difference between an audit and an inspection?

A health and safety inspection is generally limited to an examination of the physical conditions within an organisation so that an assessment can be made of basic legal compliance.

A health and safety audit is the collection of independent information pertaining to the efficiency and reliability of the organisation's total health and safety management system and involves drawing up plans for corrective action where necessary (HSG65).
