Safety of the built environment policy

A picture of a window lock.

Window locks

RoSPA recommends that windows above the ground floor are fitted with restrictors to prevent children falling out. Child safety window barriers can also provide children with a similar level of protection from falls from windows.

RoSPA recommends that restrictors incorporating a child safety catch are best. This avoids the complications of having to find keys in an emergency situation.

Finger trapping hazard

RoSPA recommends that parents and carers fit devices to doors of family dwellings that will reduce the risk of children trapping their fingers.

NB The policy does not apply to fire doors which are spring loaded and need to be shut to be effective.
