Raising standards – BSI's Consumer and Societal Policy Unit seeks help

BSI's Consumer and Societal Policy UnitIn 2003 BSI's consumer representatives have helped make buildings and cash machines more accessible, contributed to an international standard for redress, set standards for clothing that protects kids from the sun, written guidance for language school operators, proposed an international system for water safety symbols, improved the safety of recreational diving, and made fireworks safer and quieter …amongst other things!

Could your experience improve consumer protection and prevent consumer detriment?

BSI's Consumer and Societal Policy Unit is currently recruiting more consumer representatives. We want new representatives to sit on existing technical committees in traditional areas such as product specification. We also want representatives who can get involved in ground breaking work in the standards field, looking at how standards might be used in current areas of consumer detriment, particularly in the services area.

BSI's Consumer Policy Committee
Standards matter. Standards can make products and services safer, more accessible and more usable. But they can only achieve this if real consumers' needs and values are well understood by those making standards

Through its consumer policy activities BSI aims to ensure that the interests of all consumers are properly considered, taking into account the needs of children, older people, people with disabilities and different ethnic groups. We co-ordinate a group of approximately 60 consumer volunteers and representatives from consumer organizations who input directly to standards development and standards policy at national and international levels.

Recruiting for representatives
We are looking for volunteers (expenses paid) with a wide range of skills and experience. Vacancies exist in the following areas: childcare and leisure equipment, quality management, clothes sizing, tourism services, environmental claims and other consumer services. We’re open to hearing from anyone who has experience and enthusiasm for making better products and services for all.

Volunteering as a BSI Consumer Representative is one way of contributing to a better framework of societal and consumer protection for everyone.
