Be Safe and Sure
Target: People over 60 in the Barnsley borough who are vulnerable and isolated, focusing on the hard to reach or those at high risk.
Action: To develop a home safety self-assessment and advice pack (5,000 copies) plus 200 posters , and related equipment (350 ten-yr smoke alarms, 200 CO detectors, 100 hip protectors, plus room thermometers, extension sockets, tablet dispensers.
Age Concern, Calderdale
Falls Prevention and Health Ageing
Target: 1,000 older people identified as being at risk from injury through falls, and 75+ checks in 3 SRB areas.
Action: Tai Chi sessions twice a week in three areas. Peer Mentoring by 6 seniors visiting 4 homes a week. Falls management materials, referrals to existing services, 6-month trial hip protectors for residents in two care homes.

Safe At Home
Target: Older housebound people already using Age Concern Home Support Services.
Action: Home safety training for the existing 260 home support service workers, plus supply of safety equipment such as smoke alarms (including those especially for the deaf or hard of hearing), light sticks and thermometers.
Age Concern, Tower Hamlets
Fire Safety Project for Older People in Tower Hamlets
Target: Older people in Tower Hamlets, particularly those from the Bengali community.
Action: 350 smoke alarms installed or checked, 200 in Bengali community; to hold an electric blanket checking day; holding fire safety awareness events in the community.
Age Concern, Wigan
The Sleep Easy Project
Target: 500 homes for hearing impaired over 65's on specific benefits identified by the existing Home Safety Scheme.
Action: To provide 'vibrating pad' alarm systems, or a similar effective alternative, to those whose residual hearing is not sufficient to detect the sound of a conventional smoke alarm.
Anchor Trust, Hackney Staying Put
Safe At Home in Hackney
Target: 300-500 households of older people, particularly from Black/Minority/Ethnic (BME) communities (60%) and those with disabilities and/or low income, (80%).
Action: Install 200 internal and external handrails, fit 100 non-battery smoke alarms, distribute 1000 low energy light bulbs and 600 minor items of safety equipment, plus servicing 200 boilers by contractors.

Argyll & Bute Home Safety Unit
Target: Elderly people over 65 and other vulnerable members of this rural and island community.
Action: To purchase additional safety equipment to keep an existing project going (with matched funding of £34,000) in the Highlands and Islands, until new funding comes on stream in 2005. Experience showed that auditing and fitting in one visit was more effective. 350 homes will benefit
Berwick Borough Safe Steps Project
Family Safety in Berwick Borough
Target: Families with young children or those caring for young children (under 5), particularly those from disadvantaged areas within the Berwick Borough referred by other services.
Action: Provision of low cost safety equipment (70 families), home safety training (40 parents), first aid (100 parents), awareness raising workshops (4), plus recruitment and training of up to 12 volunteers to deliver accident prevention information and advice.
Children North East - RAFT Project
RAFT (Rural Action with Families in Tynedale) - Safety Equipment Scheme
Target: Pre-school families in Tynedale area identified as in greatest need by Sure Start, Neighbourhood Nurseries, Northumberland Accident Prevention and others.
Action: Home delivery and fitting of low cost safety equipment in this large rural area, plus awareness and training sessions from mobile/playbus to support. Project to be based within a one-stop childcare ship managed by RAFT.
Chiltern District Council
Get Fit, Avoid Falls
Target: Over 60's who have fallen and been identified through the Accident & Emergency Service at Wycombe Hospital, and other who have fallen or are perceived as at risk of falling identified by Chiltern Hundreds Housing Association.
Action: Exercise sessions (Tai Chi 8 sessions x 20 people), education sessions (160 packs), allocation of pendant alarms (50), allocation of hip protectors (100), provision and fitting of grab rails (100).Includes cost of transport to classes for the housebound.

Partnership Approach to Accident Reduction Risk Assessment in the Home
Target: Vulnerable older adults living independently in their own homes, carried out by Police, Fire Service & Social Services.
Action: Training given to Domiciliary Care Workers to carry out extended social care assessments (10,000), standard and sensory smoke alarms fitted, dusk to dawn external lighting, remote door entry system

RHINO (Reduce Hip Injury in Needy Older people)
Target: Elderly (over 65's) patients and residents assessed at high risk from selected wards in certain hospitals (including psychiatric) and to residential/care homes. 260 to be chosen.
Action: Osteoporosis risk assessment and nutritional assessment and promotion of hip protector use to chosen clients in a controlled environment.

Fife Safe Homes (FSH)
Target: Older people (70+) in 10 wards in Fife with highest number of accidents, focusing on Black and Minority Ethnic communities, and over 60s referred to Home Check Service. Target figure: 650 homes.
Action: Provide and install safety and security equipment, (1000 ten-yr smoke alarms, 555 CO detectors, 200 door viewers and chains), promote access to other services, do minor repairs/amendments. Matched funding of £11,300 covers care packs, etc.

Blaenau Gwent Home Safety Starter Scheme
Target: First time parents and those identified as at risk - target is 800 families.
Action: Provision of Home Safety Starter Pack at baby's eight-month check up, plus home safety loan scheme for parents on low incomes. Only money for materials sought; in kind contributions will cover salaries, training, travel and storage.

HAPPI Project (Halton Accident Prevention Partnership for Infants)
Target: Parents/carers of under 5's from 4 needy districts. 320 training places offered.
Action: Training of 4 professionals (and 4 parents to carry out peer training) in home safety and first aid. Free equipment to be provided to encourage hard to reach groups to attend. A re-useable resource pack will be developed identified by parent feedback.

Hammersmith and Fulham Children At Risk Equipped Safely (CARES)
Target: 500 families: high risk groups which come into contact with local voluntary and statutory agencies. It is anticipated 22% will be BME categories.
Action: A seconded worker will identify families, do a home visit, arrange for equipment to be installed, and make follow up visits. Advice and information on home safety will be developed and delivered by partner agencies.

Dementia Home Safety
Target: People of any age with dementia living in St Helens, Merseyside, plus their families and carers - 40 homes to be targeted.
Action: Install assistive technology in homes of people with dementia to help them maintain as much independence and choice in their lives as possible and improve the quality of life for their carers and families. Such equipment includes bath sensors, programmed lighting, sensors on taps and cookers, door entry systems.

Merton Home Safety Project
Target: Older people (65+) and those who are vulnerable, in the Borough of Merton.
Action: Publication of 5000 copies of a comprehensive Home Safety Manual capturing the best advice on a range of issues covering home safety (falls, fire, gas, electricity, medicines, etc). Essential equipment such as smoke alarms (1000 + 10 specialist), CO alarms (250) and security measures fitted in homes of vulnerable people.

Stepping onto the Falls Prevention Ladder with Seated Exercise
Target: Older people living in sheltered housing or independently
Action: 12 sessions of community based seated exercise sessions by fully trained instructors. Relevant participants to be referred to other falls prevention initiatives.
North Lanarkshire Council (Social Work Dept)
Assistive Technology Project for Vulnerable Adults
Target: People under 65 with significant cognitive impairment who could benefit from the use of smart technology as part of their care plan. Approximately 50 homes to benefit.
Action: A package of measures (fire alarms, radio pull switch alarms, fall detectors, etc) to be fitted in the homes of individuals referred by Alzheimers Scotland and health professionals.

Target: Children aged 3 to 12
Action: To develop an interactive multi-agency comprehensive programme to integrate with the English school curriculum, and to develop resultant classroom, home and support materials for open access on the internet.
Orkney Community Safety Forum
Sleep Safe
Target: Over 60's in nine remote outer isles of Orkney.
Action: To provide electric blanket testing and free replacement for those which fail or which are over ten years old. (450 blankets will be available). Access to testing facilities is limited in this remote area, and no programme of testing has ever been undertaken. At the testing sessions, other agencies will be able to pass on information on fire safety, falls prevention, etc.

Safety on Stairs
Target: People over 60 in the local community who are at risk of falling on the stairs.
Action: To provide and fit 'stair bars' to approximately 96 homes of over 60's identified by occupational therapists who would otherwise find it difficult to stay in their own homes. A pilot project with regular assessments and good evaluation.
Somerset Specialist Health Promotion Service
PROGRESS: Programme of Referral to Exercise, Safety and Support
Target: Older people who have fallen or at risk of falling.
Action: To develop co-ordinated, community based exercise programmes by training at least 4 physiotherapy staff and 8 community based exercise leaders, providing at least one class per week for 26 weeks, with a 30-min initial screen and a 30-min final consultation for each participant.
South Bedfordshire DC/Bedfordshire Heartlands PCT
Safe Kids
Target: Parents of 0-4 yr olds from three deprived areas of South Beds.
Action: Provision of a package of basic home safety equipment and running courses and providing training to parents in child/infant resuscitation training.

Home Safe Audits
Target: Over 75 yr olds living alone and identified as in need, plus families with pre-school children resident in the top 20% of most deprived wards. (400 homes to benefit)
Action: To carry out safety audits in the homes of residents in the target groups, to install safety equipment and improve safety in the homes, and to educate clients in keeping their environment safe.
South West England Regional Co-Ordination of Trading Standards (SWERCOTS)
Prevention of Accidents to Babies and Toddlers through purchase and use of essential equipment
Target: All parents of 0-3 yr olds especially vulnerable and hard to reach groups in all fourteen Local Authority Trading Standards areas in South West England.
Action: Production of video and information package giving advice to parents of young children and babies about choice and use of essential safety equipment, together with advice and tips on accident prevention.
Wakefield MDC, Health Development Unit
Intervention study to reduce the risk of Burns and Scalds from Hot Water
Target: Families (500) living in the five most deprived area in Wakefield.
Action: To identify, through surveys, houses where babies and toddlers live where there is an excessive bath water temperature. To offer such homes thermostatic valves and thermostatic adjustment, and to publicise the results of the survey as part of an awareness raising exercise in the community.

Safety Works! Jewish Community Initiative
Target: 4,000 strong strict Jewish community with large families. Cross age group focusing on safety measures in line with traditional religious practices.
Action: Holistic approach to all age groups including theatrical performance for youngest, visits to interactive safety centre, home safety checks, culturally sensitive workshops/workbooks and information leaflets, training girls from Jewish Teacher Training College and Jewish Academy for Girls to present safety sessions.
Wolverhampton Integrated Learning Disability Service
Safety in the GOLD Zone
Target: People identified as GOLD clients (Growing Old with Learning Disabilities), usually over 55's but also over 40's with Down's Syndrome.
Action: To reduce risk to this vulnerable group with medication, swallowing and mobility checks, and provision of selected items of safety equipment where appropriate. Carers would be provided with information and advice on how to manage risks through use of equipment or specialist techniques.
