London Home and Water Safety Council (LHWSC)

Background

The London Home and Water Safety Council is a Registered Charity formed with the aim to reduce the number of accidents within the Greater London areas, by educating the public in home and water safety. LHWSC is the Regional Council for RoSPA and are represented on the RoSPA National Home and Leisure Safety Committee.

Representatives of London Boroughs, Health Authorities/Trusts and other organisations with an interest in home or water safety within the London area, including the London Fire and Emergency Planning Authority, British Waterways, Royal Life Saving Society, Marine and Coastguard Agency, Port of London Authority, Thames Water etc make up the membership. Each organisation may appoint up to three representatives.

In addition to providing a forum for discussion on matters of common interest within these fields, LHWSC provide a voice for London in these important areas of safety by making representations to Government and others. The LHWSC also take part in the consultation process relating to proposed legislative change, promote and support local initiatives, hold seminars etc.

The contribution that LHWSC membership can make to the collective promotion of it’s aims is invaluable and meetings provide a useful vehicle for the exchange of ideas and information as well as giving an opportunity for practitioners and Elected Members from across London to meet and share experiences.

Meetings are usually held four times a year and take place in the new City Hall, home of the Greater London Assembly on the South Bank of the Thames, adjacent to Tower Bridge. LHWSC also has an Executive Committee and Specialist Working Group.

The value of multi-agency working is widely recognised as an effective method of working and utilising resources. Thus, with the challenges presented by ‘Our Healthier Nation’ the LHWSC encourages organisations operating within the London area promoting home and water safety to seriously consider joining.
