RoSPA’s Home Safety department has members of staff working throughout the United Kingdom to promote awareness of Home Safety matters. If you would like to know how to contact your representative, click on the appropriate area of the map:

They are available to support and assist RoSPA Home Safety members in their work, to attend Regional Home Safety Council meetings, to provide accident prevention expertise to inter-agency groups and to deliver Home Safety training.


Wales

Karen McFarlane
Karen joined RoSPA in 2003. She was responsible for establishing the Home Safety training department in Northern Ireland, designing the RoSPA Home is Where the Harm is DVD/Video and for assessing training needs within Statutory, Community and Voluntary organisation and writing and developing courses accordingly. Latterly, Karen has been responsible for delivering the training for the DHSS&PS (Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety Northern Ireland) Home Safety Strategy.

As a qualified trainer and a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, Karen has a specific interest in how people learn and uses methods during her training that accelerate learning and increase effectiveness. Now based in Wales, Karen provides Home Safety training for Statutory, Community and Voluntary organisations

Scotland

Nicola Butters

Nicola Butters is the Home Safety Development Officer for Scotland.

Nicola is a keen new addition to the Home Safety Team after having recently completed a degree course in Occupational Therapy and has a particular interest in health and fitness.

Her role includes the supporting of organisations, agencies and voluntary groups to take up home safety initiatives and encourages the promoting of Home Safety.

Along with other RoSPA staff in Scotland she works in partnership with major organisations to raise awareness of the home accident problem and to discuss ways of tackling this problem. This is done through presentations, organising seminars and training, campaigning for change and attending local and national committees on home safety, community safety and accident prevention.

Currently the RoSPA Home Safety staff in Scotland provide the Secretariat to the Scottish Accident Prevention Council (SAPC), Home Safety Committee, are members of Home Safety Scotland (HSS) and attend the Scottish Community Safety Network (SCSN).

Northern Ireland

Main areas of work include:

  • Providing information in response to incoming inquiries

  • Lobbying for improved injury data collection and dissemination
  • Consultation on strategy development and implementation
  • The facilitation of multi-agency working groups
  • Fundraising for project resources
  • Presence at key exhibitions
  • Secretariat and strategic guidance of Home Accident Prevention volunteers (HAP NI).

West of England

Colin Morris
Colin Morris is the Home Safety Manager (West of England). He can support Home Safety projects and activities throughout the region. This includes three regional councils in which local government and public health professionals develop enterprising initiatives, meeting local needs.

Advice and information can be supplied to RoSPA members and organisations aiming to increase safety in the home .

As a teacher and playwright, he is keen to develop imaginative ways of promoting Home Safety.

East of England

Sheila Merrill
Sheila Merrill is the Home Safety Manager (East of England) and gives advice and information on home accident prevention issues, working with local government, the health service and voluntary organisations Sheila supports and encourages organisations and agencies to take up home safety initiatives,

Sheila has worked for RoSPA for over fifteen years and represents RoSPA on the Institute of Home Safety executive committee, as well as supporting numerous other safety committees and multi agency groups in the area.

Sheila has a keen interest in training and is continuously helping to develop and deliver numerous Home Safety training courses. She is a tutor on the City & Guilds Home Safety Course, which as a qualified trainer, she has updated.

North of England

Kairen Sanderson
Kairen Sanderson is the Home Safety Manager (North of England) representing the society in all aspects of Home Safety activity. Kairen has worked for RoSPA for a number of years and is actively involved in developing and delivering Home Safety training; liaising with multi agency groups across the area about Home Safety issues and supports three regional home safety councils.

Kairen has a particular interest in training and development and has recently gained membership of the Chartered Institute of Personal Development.
