Making the home a safer environment
Wales Home Safety Council
The Wales Home Safety Council has been established and operating in the area of home safety for many years. It comprises of an executive committee of councillors, council officers and a community fire officer. There are quarterly meetings where councillors, local authority officers, health specialists, fire officers and anyone who has an interest in home safety matters can meet to discuss current issues. The council is allied to RoSPA and the RoSPA Home Safety Manager for Wales is the secretary and provides administrative support.
All 22 Welsh local authorities are eligible to be members which entitles them to send two voting representatives to quarterly meetings. Also invited to be part of the council are representatives from Local Health Boards, Local Health Alliances, Fire Brigades, Ambulance Services, community groups and safety orientated businesses as well as individuals who wish to be affiliated to it. The meetings are held in North and South Wales with an annual general meeting in June.
The chairman and an executive member represent the Wales Home Safety Council on the UK National Home and Leisure Safety Committee that meets three times a year.
The aims and objectives of the WHSC are:
- To co-ordinate, stimulate and promote home safety education, training and publicity across the whole of Wales working in partnership with RoSPA.
- For the council to be an “all Wales” home safety resource.
- To provide, along with organisations, a valuable source of expertise and knowledge which is available to the public, media and relevant agencies in Wales.
