Manual Handling: Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs)
Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs), which can involve the muscles, tendons and joints, affect one million people a year in Great Britain. They are the most common cause of occupational ill health in Great Britain today, with a cost to society of nearly £6 billion. Taking measures to assess and ultimately reduce these risks will ensure that the likelihood of suffering from MSDs, such as back pain, are minimised. To achieve this, employers should note the following:
- Under the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, employers are required to reduce risks that may result in MSDs.
- Employers must identify all manual handling activities that pose a risk of injury.
- Any manual handling activity representing a significant risk must be avoided.
- High risk activities should be mechanised or automated whenever possible.
- Risk assessments must be undertaken, taking into consideration the task, the load, the environment and the individual.
- Through risk control measures, employers should reduce the risk of injury to as low as reasonably practicable.
- Employees must be provided with the necessary information, instruction and training.
- All manual handling activities, risk assessments and control measures must be reviewed and monitored.
