WOW Waterside Safety Challenge
The WOW (Wild Over Waterways) Waterside Safety Challenge is a set of five interactive waterside safety activities for 7-11 year olds developed by British Waterways. The fun activities can easily be accessed by clicking on the Waterside Safety Challenge button on the kids’ homepage of the WOW website at www.wow4water.net. The activities teach children the importance of the SAFE message – Stay Away From the Edge. This safety message can be applied equally to canals, rivers, lakes and reservoirs.
Starting at the Waterside Safety Challenge interactive menu, children can choose any of the five waterside safety activities.
In Spot the Hazard children decide what is safe and what is not safe by looking at an interactive waterside scene. They get points for identifying hazards and answering safety questions correctly.
At Safety Poster Maker children design their own waterside safety poster using the on-screen resources and can print off a hard copy of their finished poster.
In Hazard Help children are shown a series of four waterside safety hazards and are asked to choose the correct response to each situation.
The Safety Board Game is an interactive board game for one or two players. Children answer questions about waterside safety as they move their counters towards the finish.
At Safety Limerick Builder children choose one of six topics then compose (and listen to) their own amusing safety limerick.
Teachers and group leaders can find further detailed information on planning a safe visit to British Waterways' inland waterways (including an equipment checklist and advice on risk assessments) by downloading the Visit Planning Document from the WOW website.
