MORR™ : An International Comparisons Review
Belgium
Information from the Federal Ministry of Employment and Labour (Federaal Ministerie Van Tewerkstelling En Arbeid) and the employers organization (union of Belgian enterprises: VBO).
In Belgium there is a private insurance system for all accidents at work, including those occurring during commuting and other work-related traffic accidents. There are figures showing the statistics (evolution 1982-1999) of work-related traffic accidents. In 1999 more than 10 % of all work related accidents were traffic accidents. More than 40 % of the deadly work accidents are due to traffic. Belgium does not have statistics on work related road accidents pro sector (construction, metal, wood …) but some sector road accidents may be available soon. To compare these figures with the overall traffic accident figures, the Belgian Institute for Traffic Security (Belgisch Instituut voor de Verkeersveiligheid) will provide their figures in due course.
Currently no concrete actions are taking place in the Belgian Ministry of Labour regarding the prevention of work related accidents (confirmed by the secretariat of the High Council for Protection and Prevention at work).
It is believed that at regional level there are attempts to develop some concrete actions; they are trying to convince companies to establish plans in accordance (after consultation) with the workers delegation in the company to reduce the home-work traffic by their own cars.
