RECORD SAFETY YEAR FOR SCOTLAND
Scottish Hydro Electric has won Scotland’s top health and safety award presented by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
The company will be presented with the RoSPA Scotland Award at the Glasgow Moat House on October 1. Scottish Hydro Electric will receive the trophy for achieving the highest standard of entry by a Scottish company in the Society’s national awards scheme.
This year the awards have attracted a record number of Scottish entries and more than 150 companies will be honoured for their exemplary safety records at the Glasgow ceremony.
For the second year running, CCG (UK) Ltd - Offshore, Aberdeen, will receive the Sector Award for the Hotel and Catering Industry and Clydebank-based Kvaerner Energy has won the Engineering Sector.
Distinguished Service Awards will go to Mike McGinley from Strathclyde Health and Safety Group and Stuart Nattrass, formerly of the Health and Safety Executive. They will be presented with their awards at the Glasgow ceremony which follows the RoSPA Scotland Congress and Exhibition (Sept 30-Oct 1), sponsored by ScottishPower and British Energy.
RoSPA’s award scheme recognises firms and organisations which have shown consistent improvements in their health and safety management record. RoSPA also believes that one of the best ways to improve health and safety practice is to reward those who lead by example.
Roger Bibbings, RoSPA’s Occupational Safety Adviser, said: "These winners exemplify what can be achieved at the cutting edge of modern health and safety management. They have recognised the value of investing in occupational health and safety and are acting as role models for others in their respective fields. If more organisations showed this type of commitment there would be a dramatic reduction in occupational injuries and ill health."
The awards are judged by independent experts from all sides of industry. They are divided into categories - President’s, Gold Medal, Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit. To receive an award, a firm must demonstrate an improvement in its safety record over a specific period of time. Sector Awards are for outstanding performance in individual sections of industry.
