12/12/00 : LOOK OUT! THAT CHRISTMAS TREE IS DANGEROUS

Rocking around the Christmas tree could be one of the quickest ways to land in hospital as the party season gets into full swing, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned today. 30/11/00 : THREAT TO CAR SAFETY PLAN AS D-DAY LOOMS

The lives of thousands of vulnerable road users in Britain and the rest of Europe may depend on the way European Commissioners vote on Tuesday, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned today. Proposals to change the design of car fronts in a way which could save 2,000 deaths and serious injuries in Britain alone are to be discussed by the Commissioners. Knives are number one in the Top Ten of Dangerous Tools, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents stressed today in support of the Government’s campaign to cut Easter DIY casualties. Accidents with knives used in do-it-yourself lead to more than 22,000 people in the UK needing hospital treatment each year. Full Story»

Hundreds of over-ambitious and over-tired DIY enthusiasts will spend Easter in hospital instead of enjoying their handiwork, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned today as it welcomed a new safety alert from the Department of Trade and Industry. RoSPA says among the reasons DIY injuries double over the holiday weekend are people tackling jobs that are beyond their capabilities and for which they have inadequate tools and safety gear. 08/11/00 : RoSPA ANGER OVER THREAT TO CAR SAFETY PLAN IN EUROPE

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is appalled by plans to water down proposals designed to make car fronts more "pedestrian friendly" - and save 2,000 lives a year across the European Union. The Enterprise Commissioner wants to overturn a longstanding European Commission commitment to legislation, aimed at protecting pedestrians hit by cars, in favour of a much weaker voluntary code for manufacturers.
