RECORD NUMBER OF FIRMS CELEBRATE STAYING SAFE
Nearly 1,000 businesses and organisations from home and abroad will be celebrating their outstanding safety achievements next week when they are honoured by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards, sponsored by RMC, will be presented to around 900 UK organisations and 60 from overseas.
The record number of winners demonstrates the high standard of health and safety being achieved in the workplace.
The UK’s premier occupational safety award - the Sir George Earle Trophy - has been won by Derbyshire-based Toyota Motor Manufacturing (UK) Ltd.
The RoSPA Occupational Safety Training Award will go to Yorkshire Electricity Group plc Supply, Huddersfield. This is given to the company or organisation with the most effectively managed health and safety programme.
The Norwich Union Trophy for small and medium-sized businesses will be presented to Trant Engineering Ltd, a Southampton-based construction firm.
The Astor Trophy, awarded to the organisation with the best-managed occupational health programme, has this year been won by East Cheshire (NHS) Trust. The trophy is named after RoSPA’s Immediate Past President, Lord Astor of Hever.
The award ceremonies will be held at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel on May 22 and 23, where all branches of business and industry will be represented.
Roger Bibbings, RoSPA’s Occupational Safety Adviser, said: “The RoSPA awards have yet again demonstrated that many businesses and organisations put workplace health and safety at the top of their agenda.
“With one million workplace injuries a year and 2.1 million cases of ill-health, caused or made worse by work, strong health and safety management is imperative. If more companies showed the kind of commitment practised by our award winners, there would be a dramatic reduction in the figures.”
The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards run alongside Safety and Health Expo 2001, and the Society’s Occupational Safety and Health congress “Making it Happen!” at the NEC, Birmingham. Some of the awards will be given at RoSPA Scotland in the autumn.
