27/11/02 : NEW GUIDANCE ON SETTING SAFETY TARGETS

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has produced new guidance which details good practice in setting corporate health and safety improvement targets. The document, Targets for Change, has the support of the Health and Safety Commission, the Institute of Directors, the GMB union, the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health and the Association of British Insurers. 21/11/02 : WEEKEND PROBLEMS IF FIRE STRIKE GOES AHEAD

Businesses and residents could face extra problems this weekend if the firefighters strike goes ahead, The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned today. The second strike will cover a weekend for the first time. Call-outs to house fires often peak when people are cooking. Many families will cook more meals at home during the weekend than when they are at work or children are at school. Full Story»

11/11/02 : SAFETY ORGANISATIONS CONFIDENT THAT GOVERNMENT WILL ACT ON CORPORATE KILLINGS

The UK’s three major safety organisations today reaffirmed their confidence in the Government’s commitment to introduce a new offence of “corporate killing” in the next session of Parliament. RoSPA, the British Safety Council and the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health are seriously concerned about the effect of recent press reports and media speculation that there will be no mention of the enactment of a new offence of corporate killing in the Queen’s Speech this week. 07/11/02 : RECORD NUMBER JOIN FORCES AGAINST HOME ACCIDENTS

A record number of home safety professionals will meet next week in an attempt to beat the UK’s biggest accident problem. Every year about 4,000 people are killed as a result of an accident in the home and more than 2.8 million seek medical assistance. Full Story»


05/11/02 : NEW HOME SAFETY PLAN LAUNCHED IN WALES

A 10-point plan to make new homes safer will be launched at the first Wales Home Safety Council national conference on Thursday (November 7). Pembrokeshire architect John Pickett has worked with the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents on simple ideas to make new houses considerably safer for less than £900. Full Story»


31/10/02 : “THINK BIG” TO BEAT FIREWORK DANGERS

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is urging families to “think big” as bonfire celebrations get into full swing over the next few days. Last year, firework injuries rose by a frightening 40 per cent to 1,362 – the worst statistics since 1995. 24/10/02 : ACCIDENTS GO UP WHEN CLOCKS GO BACK

The number of people killed and injured in road accidents is certain to rise again after the clocks go back this weekend unless drivers take more time, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents warned today. Road crashes sadly increase after the clocks change, with the arrival of darker evenings and worsening weather conditions. Last year the number of people killed on Britain’s roads in November was 332 – a rise of 29 on the previous month. The total number of injuries in road accidents went up by 888 to 28,863.
