RoSPA AWARDS TOP 1,000 MARK FOR FIRST TIME
A record 1,000 businesses and organisations are to be honoured at next month’s RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards.
Most of the awards, sponsored by RMC Group plc, will be presented at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel at the NEC on May 15 and 16.
More than 950 of the winners are based in the UK with about 60 coming from overseas, including entries from USA, China, India, Hungary, Russia and Germany.
The record number of winners demonstrates the continuing efforts being made to improve standards of health and safety in the workplace. All branches of business and industry will attend the awards presentations, which are now in their 46th year.
John Howard, RoSPA Director of Safety Policy, said: “More than 1,000 successful entries for the awards this year is very encouraging, but so many more organisations could benefit from celebrating their good health and safety management with employees and other stakeholders. We would like to see this figure double over the next few years.”
The UK’s premier occupational safety award – the Sir George Earle Trophy – has been won by AWE plc, the company which manages and operates the Atomic Weapons Establishment in Berkshire for the Ministry of Defence.
The RoSPA Occupational Training Award goes to 24seven Utility Services of Romford, Essex. This is given to the company or organisation with the most effectively managed health and safety training programme.
The Norwich Union Trophy for small and medium-sized businesses has been won by Central (High Rise) Ltd, steeplejacks of Nottingham. Mech-Tool Engineering Ltd of Darlington and Baron of Beef, Newcastle-Upon-Tyne, were highly commended.
The Astor Trophy, awarded to the company with the best-managed occupational health programme, has been won by Coventry-based Powergen UK plc, with Westinghouse UK Fuel Business of Preston highly commended.
The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards run alongside Safety and Health Expo 2002, and the Society’s Occupational Safety and Health at Work Congress “Sharpening the Focus on Performance” at the NEC Birmingham. Some of the awards will be presented at RoSPA Scotland in September.
