CONSTRUCTION FIRMS BUILD UP SAFETY AWARDS

Organisations from the UK’s construction and construction engineering industries have been honoured by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents for their outstanding safety records over the past year.

More than 350 construction firms have achieved recognition for good health and safety practice out of 1,000 RoSPA award winners over all. As well as their own sector honours, construction businesses scooped two Order of Distinction awards, 14 President’s Awards, 40 gold medals, 176 gold, 43 silver, 44 bronze and 17 merit awards.

The RoSPA 2002 Occupational Health and Safety Awards were sponsored by RMC Group plc - the world’s leading supplier of ready mixed concrete and a leading producer of aggregates, concrete products and other construction materials.

RMC has a long-standing commitment to health and safety. Its support for the awards in recent years has helped to raise awareness of health and safety within the construction industry.

All branches of business and industry were represented at ceremonies, which took place on May 15 and 16 at the NEC’s Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel.

The Construction Industry Sector winner for 2002 was Morgan Est plc of Rugby. Highly commended in this sector were: Haymills of London, Haden Young Ltd of Watford and Trant Engineering Ltd of Southampton. The judges made a Special Award for Contractor Safety this year and it went to Fawley Refinery Site Contractors of Hampshire.

The Norwich Union Trophy, RoSPA’s major safety award for small to medium-sized businesses went to steeplejack firm, Central (High Rise) Ltd, Nottingham.

John Howard, RoSPA Director of Safety Policy, said: “More than 1,000 successful entries for the awards this year is very encouraging, but so many more organisations could benefit from celebrating their good health and safety management with employees and other stakeholders. We would like to see this figure double over the next few years.”
