NEW CHAIRMAN AIMS TO KEEP ROAD SAFETY HIGH ON AGENDA
RoSPA’s Chief Driving Examiner Bob Smalley has been elected chairman of AIRSO, one of the country’s leading road safety organisations.
He is aiming to improve the standard of driving in the UK, particularly among company car and van drivers.
His appointment was marked by a celebration lunch at West Midlands Police Training and Conference Centre in Birmingham yesterday (February 11).
Bob, from Wythall, was formerly Chief Superintendent in charge of motorway and traffic policing in the West Midlands. He was responsible for the installation of the first red-light enforcement camera in the UK.
As Chief Driving Examiner for the RoSPA Advanced Drivers Association since 1990, he has been a leading figure in post-test training for those who drive for a living or as part of their job.
He was a founder member of the Fleet Driver Training Association and was recently a member of the European Advanced Project to provide guidance on novice and post-test driver and rider training in Europe.
He said: “This appointment will allow me to continue to keep work-related road risk and the need to raise the level of driving standards in the UK high on the agendas of those who can bring about change.”
AIRSO is the Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers. Its 400 members are drawn from commercial transport, fleet management, driver training, independent and local government road safety organisations, the police, fire, health and enforcement agencies.
The association aims to promote education and training among all road users in order to reduce accidents. It is consulted by statutory and non-statutory organisations on road safety issues.
AIRSO provides contacts, information and advice for its members to enable them to work towards improving road-user behaviour, attitude and skills.
