RoSPA TAKES OVER ACCIDENT STATISTICS SERVICE

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents is to take over the provision of UK home and leisure accident statistics from the Department of Trade and Industry in the New Year.

New statistics are no longer being collected, but RoSPA has been given a copy of the DTI’s Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System database from 1978 to 2002.

An agreement has been reached with the DTI for the Society to run an enquiry service using the existing HASS and LASS databases for a further five years.

John Howard, RoSPA Director of Safety Policy, said: “RoSPA is delighted to have been chosen to ensure the continued provision of important home and leisure accident data for researchers and other interested parties. These statistics are a key resource in accident prevention work.”

It was announced in May that the DTI would no longer collect new home and leisure accident data, based on people who seek treatment at hospital.

From January 1, 2004, enquiries about home and leisure accidents statistics should be made to: The Information Centre, RoSPA, Edgbaston Park, 353 Bristol Road, Birmingham B5 7ST; e-mail infocentre@rospa.com; fax 0121 248 2001; telephone 0121 248 2066. Media enquiries should be made to: Roger Vincent, Senior Press Officer, RoSPA, 0121 248 2134, e-mail rvincent@rospa.com .

Copies of the 2000-2002 Home and Leisure Accident Surveillance System report and the 1997, 1998 and 1999 reports can be viewed on-line or ordered here.
