New research for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents published today shows the benefits of directors returning to the shop floor to tackle health and safety issues. The Society’s national occupational health and safety congress in Birmingham, sponsored by EDF Energy, was told that more needed to be done to encourage directors and senior managers to go “back to the floor” to see the situation for themselves. A man with a mower is likely to be the most dangerous thing in UK gardens this Bank Holiday weekend, RoSPA warned today as thousands of people prepare for their annual assault on lawns and flowerbeds. About 300,000 people are hurt in their gardens each year seriously enough to go to hospital – 110,000 of them children. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has produced a video to show parents how to choose and fit child car seats correctly, after a survey revealed that half of the respondents were unable to find any advice or assistance on the subject. The video - Choosing and Fitting Child Car Seats - has been made available to UK road safety officers to use in helping parents to overcome the problem. Nearly 70 organisations are behind a new website - www.orsa.org.uk - which has been launched to raise awareness of work-related road safety and to encourage businesses to manage at work-road risk more effectively. The Occupational Road Safety Alliance site has been developed with the support of the Department for Transport. It provides ORSA members and others in the road safety and occupational safety communities with access to up-to-the minute information and new developments about managing occupational road risk.
