RoSPA’S OCCUPATIONAL AWARD WINNERS TOP 1,100

More than 1,100 businesses and organisations will be honoured at RoSPA’s annual Occupational Health and Safety Awards presentations this week.

The awards are sponsored by RMC Group plc, and will be presented at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel at the NEC on Wednesday and Thursday (May 12 and 13).

There are more than 1,000 winners based in the UK, but awards are also given to organisations from overseas, including Malaysia, United Arab Emirates, Republic of Ireland, Hungary, India, USA and Bahrain.

The UK’s premier occupational safety award – the Sir George Earle Trophy – goes to FMC Technologies Limited of Dunfermline.

The Norwich Union Trophy for small and medium-sized businesses has been won by Mech-Tool Engineering Limited of Darlington.

RoSPA’s Occupational Training Award - for the company or organisation with the most effectively managed health and safety training programme - goes to Black & Veatch Consulting from Surrey.

The Astor Trophy, for the organisation with the best-managed occupational health programme, has been won by East Riding of Yorkshire Council.

Palmer & Harvey McLane Ltd, of Hove, East Sussex, are winners of the RoSPA trophy for managing occupational road risk for the second year running. Planned Maintenance Engineering Ltd of London are highly commended in this category.

The awards programme is now in its 48th year and covers all branches of business and industry.

John Howard, RoSPA Chief Executive, said: “The awards highlight a business or organisation’s success in reducing occupational accidents and promoting the health of its workforce. They are about efficient business and safety management, not just a low accident record, which can be a matter of chance.

“The employers that take part in the awards scheme are those that invest in the well-being of their staff for the long-term benefit of their business.”

The RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards run alongside Safety and Health Expo 2004, and the Society’s Occupational Safety and Health at Work Congress “Learning, Sharing, Moving Forward”, sponsored by EDF Energy, at the NEC Birmingham. Some of the awards will be presented at RoSPA Scotland in September.
