CONSTRUCTION FIRMS WIN ALMOST 400 SAFETY AWARDS

Nearly 400 businesses and organisations from the UK’s construction and construction engineering industries have been honoured by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents for their outstanding safety records over the past year.

In total, the industries claimed three Order of Distinction awards, 27 President’s awards, 53 gold medals, 210 gold, 49 silver, 28 bronze and 21 merit awards.

Winners attended RoSPA’s annual Occupational Health and Safety Awards ceremonies, on May 12 and 13, at the NEC’s Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel.

The awards are sponsored by RMC Group plc - the world’s leading supplier of ready mixed concrete and a leading producer of aggregates, concrete products and other construction materials. RMC’s support has encouraged a steady growth in successful entries from the construction industries in recent years.

Joint construction industry sector award winners were Birse Rail Limited of Birmingham and Central (High Rise) Limited of Nottingham. Highly commended in this sector was Haymills of London.

The construction engineering sector award was presented to Fluor Limited of Surrey. Taylor Woodrow Engineering & Consultancy in Bedford also received a commendation in this category.

The Costain Group claimed the highest number of awards – 27 in total - ranging from merit to gold in status.

Roger Bibbings, RoSPA’s Occupational Safety Adviser, said: “The winners of these awards are beacons of excellence, which all other businesses in this sector should seek to learn from and emulate.

“If the whole industry was to perform consistently at the level achieved by these companies, countless lives would be saved and the working environment in construction would be safer.

“Construction is inherently hazardous, but these winners are proof that risks in this sector can be managed successfully.”
