N. IRELAND CLINICS TO FIND DANGEROUS ELECTRIC BLANKETS
RoSPA is behind a new campaign in Northern Ireland to root out dangerous electric blankets, which are a major threat to lives and property.
Recent checks on electric blankets in the province have shown that nearly 70 per cent fail safety standards and could lead to fires.
But under a RoSPA scheme, supported by the Department of Trade and Industry and the Department of Health and Social Services and Public Safety, a specialist has been trained to run blanket safety clinics.
Electrical engineer Michael Doherty of Newcastle, County Down, will go to local authorities, community groups and other organisations to run sessions where people can take along their blankets for testing.
Janice Bisp, RoSPA Home Safety Manager for Northern Ireland, said: “Michael has been trained to national and international standards as part of RoSPA’s efforts to improve safety in Northern Ireland.
“Electric blankets cause between 800 and 1,000 fires in the UK each year, with nearly 20 deaths and 200 injuries. Most of the casualties are over 60. The testing days Michael will run will provide free safety checks on electric blankets and give tips on their correct use.
“The main target will be older people, some of whom use electric blankets as a cheap source of heating. It is suspected that some blankets are never taken off the bed and people are unaware when they have become worn or damaged. Electric blankets need to checked at least every three years.
“Injuries and fires often happen because people do not use their blankets properly or never have them serviced.”
A recent survey revealed that more than one third of electric blankets are over 15 years old. Newer ones have to meet stricter safety regulations, including having a cut-out device to prevent overheating.
The testing service will launched at 2pm on July 8 at RoSPA, Nella House, Dargan Crescent, Belfast BT3 9JP.
It is available to organisations throughout Northern Ireland for a daily charge of £290. Bookings can be made on 028 43726067.
