CHANCE TO LEARN HOW TO BENEFIT FROM ACCIDENTS

RoSPA is staging a seminar to show employers how to enhance their ability to learn vital lessons by investigating accidents thoroughly.

Accidents cost individuals suffering and businesses and organisations time and money. Recent guidance from the Health and Safety Executive has challenged organisations to review how well they are complying with their duties to investigate and learn from accidents and incidents.

Roger Bibbings, RoSPA Occupational Safety Adviser, said: “Many businesses are still not gaining maximum benefit from their approach to the investigation of accidents and incidents.

“As a result, they are not learning the lessons which could improve their overall management of health and safety.

“Professional investigation can yield huge value, particularly by pinpointing areas for change and development, thus cutting future casualties, costs and appearances in court.”

The seminar – From the Ashes of Disaster – will detail new developments in learning from accidents and incidents at work. It will be held at the Marriott Forest of Arden Hotel, Warwickshire, on November 8.

It should be of interest to anyone involved in health and safety risk management and the development of safe systems of work, such as health and safety professionals, chief executives, risk managers, safety representatives, human resources managers and emergency service investigators.

Speakers include: Jonathan Russell, Head of Enforcement Policy Branch, HSE; John Kingston of Noordwijk Risk Initiative Foundation; Simon McDermott-Brown, Director Safety Practice, Quo Behavioural Systems; and business leaders who have experienced the benefits of thorough accident investigation.

Roger Bibbings said: “We hope the seminar will inform, challenge and motivate people to refocus on accidents and incidents as valuable opportunities for safety change.”

RoSPA has spent five years working with the HSE to stimulate national debate on what needs to be done to enable organisations to learn from safety failure.
