RoSPA’S HOME SAFETY FRAMEWORK NOW IN WELSH TOO

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents has translated and adapted the English version of its Home Safety Curriculum Framework into Welsh. The information has also been tailored for the Welsh curriculum, so that schoolchildren in the country can benefit from home safety advice.

Pupils in Wales can now be provided with home safety information from the beginning of their school days until they are old enough to leave. The framework is aimed at schoolchildren from key stage one to key stage four.

It was created for teachers to help pupils gain a better understanding of accidents in the home and how they can be prevented. For information on how this resource corresponds to the Welsh school curriculum and links to the Welsh home safety framework go to www.rospa.com/homesafety/wales/curriculum

It is hoped that the framework can be incorporated into children’s studies and includes a lesson plan for each activity, and an accompanying worksheet where appropriate.

Issues included in the framework are:

  • Understanding the scale of accidents in the home
  • Water safety
  • Safe play and leisure
  • Computer safety
  • Fire safety
  • The concept of risk and learning about hazards.

Jan Holdaway, RoSPA Home Safety Manager for Wales, said: “We hope that schools will take up the issues in this resource, and make children aware of the different aspects of home safety.

“In the UK around a million children under the age of 15 go to hospital each year as a result of an accident in the home. Whatever can be done to educate pupils to help reduce this number should be welcomed, and we hope that now the framework is in Welsh it will be used by a wider audience.”

The curriculum has been developed and translated with the support of the Welsh Assembly and the Department of Trade and Industry.
