AWARDS RECOGNISE SERVICE TO ROAD SAFETY
Tireless efforts to reduce deaths and injuries on Britain’s roads have been recognised by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents.
Bob Smalley and Colin Pettener have both been chosen by RoSPA’s National Road Safety Committee to receive Distinguished Service Awards for Road Safety.
Bob, of Wythall, was recognised for his commitment to driver training.
After a career spanning 31 years as a police officer in the West Midlands, during which he was in charge of the region's motorway and traffic policing, Bob became involved with RoSPA in 1990 as Head of Driver Training.
He has had responsibility for RoSPA’s Advanced Drivers Association (now called RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders), and has served on many committees including RoSPA’s National Road Safety Committee and National Road Safety Advisory Group.
His enthusiasm for road safety and driver training has remained since his retirement from RoSPA in 2000 and he is now RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders Chief Examiner.
Colin, of Shrewsbury, received his award in recognition of his road safety work in local government and his role in the development of the National Driver Improvement Scheme.
During more than 24 years as a County Road Safety Officer for Shropshire County Council, Colin played a leading role as the National School Crossing Patrol Service Adviser and was founding Chairman of the Association of National Driver Improvement Scheme Providers.
He has also been active in the Institute of Road Safety Officers, Local Authority Road Safety Officers Association and the Association of Industrial Road Safety Officers.
He was made an MBE in 2006 for his services to local government and now has a part-time, UK-wide role as a Road Safety Consultant/Adviser for the Telford-based TTC Group.
Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA Chief Executive, presented Bob and Colin with their awards during the RoSPA National Road Safety Congress.
He said: “We are particularly pleased to be able to recognise such impressive and unstinting service as Bob and Colin have given. This is a rare award, kept for the very special people who have made a real impact on road safety at a national level. Both of these citations resulted in unanimous decisions and we are proud of the excellence that Bob and Colin have achieved.”
