COSTAIN NAMED BEST OF 1,400 SAFETY WINNERS BY RoSPA

RoSPA’s premier occupational health and safety award, the Sir George Earle Trophy, has been presented to Costain Major Civil Engineering Division.

The company, based in Maidenhead, Berkshire, was chosen as the best of more than 1,400 winners at this year’s Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents Occupational Health and Safety Awards.

Factors which led to Costain taking the trophy included: its senior managers’ robust commitment and leadership; the approach to performance target setting and review; initiatives taken to enhance the leadership role of supervisors; and the approach to providing comprehensive occupational health services at site level, including its policy on drugs and alcohol.

Other major award winners included: The RoSPA Training Trophy - joint winners GE Healthcare - The Grove Centre, Amersham, and HM Prison Service - Public Sector Prisons; Norwich Union Trophy, highlighting the health and safety management achievements of small to medium-sized organisations - Ashridge Construction, Thatcham; the Astor Trophy for the best-managed occupational health programme - Renfrewshire Council; International Dilmun Environmental Award, sponsored by Gulf Petrochemical Industries Company of Bahrain - Skanska Utilities, Leeds; RoSPA Managing Occupational Road Risk Trophy - Tesco.com - Home Shopping Delivery.

Organisations compete for the sector awards and specialist trophies, but there are also achievement awards at merit, bronze, silver, gold, gold medal, president’s and order of distinction levels.

The awards, sponsored by NEBOSH, were presented over three days (May 22-24) of gala dinners and ceremonies at the Birmingham Hilton Metropole Hotel, at the NEC, attended by nearly 3,000 people. The presentations were made by Baroness Gibson of Market Rasen, President of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, Lord Jordan of Bournville, Deputy President, Lord Brougham and Vaux, Vice-President, and Tom Mullarkey, RoSPA Chief Executive.
