RoSPA NI : Electric Blanket Service Project 2004-6
In 2004 RoSPA secured funding from DTI and DHSSPS to establish an electric blanket checking service for NI.
Prior to this project, the only option for NI residents was to post electric blankets back to GB for manufacturers to check. RoSPA organised NI’s first Electric Blanket Safety Roadshow, which toured NI for 4 weeks and showed a 70% failure rate amongst those blankets tested. However, this was too labour intensive and expensive to repeat regularly, so a more long term solution was sought.
The aim of our project was to establish a permanent, flexible Northern Ireland based service for electric blanket checks. The secured funding was used to purchase the most modern portable equipment for testing, and to identify and train the most qualified candidate. DM Electrics showed enthusiasm in developing our project with us and we supplied 2 weeks of training for them with Clive Trunkfield, the renowned European expert.
A 2-year partnership contract was agreed between DM Electrics and RoSPA to ensure the continued development and growth of the project, this has now come to an end. This service is now well established and we are satisfied that it will be sustained.
As a result, we are now able to relinquish any claim to the equipment bought by RoSPA for the purpose of checking the safety of electric blankets and wish DM Electrics continued success in the development of this venture.
