RoSPA NI : Home Safety : Projects
In 2002, RoSPA, in conjunction with Home Accident Prevention NI and Replay Productions, commissioned a theatre production ‘Little Lou Tells A Story’. The drama was based loosely on the fairy tale Snow White and aimed to raise awareness of accidental poisoning in the home, to reduce the number of children injured every year, and to improve knowledge and change behaviour.
The target audience was those most at risk from accidental poisoning – children aged 3-6 from areas of deprivation. Messages were incorporated into the drama regarding the most common cause of accidental poisoning within this age group - swallowing household cleaners or prescribed medicines combined with poor storage and lack of supervision. By targeting this age group, it was also expected that teachers and parents would see the production.
The tour centred on the most disadvantaged areas of Northern Ireland (as indicated in the Nobel Report) and was seen by 4000 children. It visited 30 venues including mother and toddler groups, nursery schools and primary schools between December 2002 and February 2003. There were over 110 performances in total.
RoSPA commissioned research to measure the impact of the drama, how effective it was in getting the safety messages across and hence its effectiveness as a medium for this age group and these kinds of campaigns.
