RoSPA / BNFL Scholarship Scheme
Scholarship to Save Lives and Reduce Injuries
BNFL has endowed RoSPA with a special fund to finance a scholarship scheme over the next ten years to enable students; 'to carry out research into safety and accident prevention that will produce defined, practical and influential outcomes to help save lives and prevent injuries.'
Applications are now being invited for the 2010 Scholarship Awards.
Applications are invited for projects up to £20k per annum addressing any of the following key safety challenge themes:
- Road: ‘To improve standards of driving behaviour’
(particularly young drivers, older drivers, speeding, fatigue related accidents, motorcycle safety);
- Home: ‘To reduce home accidents’
(particularly data collection/analysis; poverty and deprivation, child safety,);
- Work: ‘To raise standards of health and safety management’
(particularly in small firms, accident investigation, director leadership, workforce involvement, costing accidents);
- Water and Leisure: ‘To reduce injuries in water and leisure activities’ (particularly safety in outdoor education);
- Safety Education: ‘To enhance risk understanding and awareness’
(particularly risk awareness in preparation for work);
- General Safety: ‘To increase public awareness of safety and accident prevention’
(particularly safety and risk literacy among key decision makers and communicators).
The closing date for applications is 2nd April 2010 and the winners will be announced at the RoSPA awards dinner in May 2010.
Information on Entering
Applications should be made on no more than two sides of A4 setting out the case for the proposed research;
- aims and objectives
- methodologies to be employed
- timescales
- anticipated costs
- benefits
- and supervisory arrangements.
Summary biographical details of researchers and supervisors should also be included.

To reduce injuries in water and leisure activities
Dr Martin Barwood and Professor Mike Tipton, University of Portsmouth
Awarded: £20,000
The scale and impact of child injuries in Nepal (3 year study)
Puspa Raj Pant and Professor Elizabeth Towner, University of the West of England
Awarded: £65,000
The Scheme is being guided by an Oversight Group comprised of:
