Where to get information....

RoSPA
By becoming an occupational member of RoSPA you can get instant telephone access to RoSPA’s Information Services which provide up-to-date technical advice on health and safety matters. You can also get details of essential RoSPA services - including training courses, audit and review services and our visiting staff advisory service (tel: 0121 248 2000; fax: 0121 248 2001).

Free Leaflets
A wide range of free leaflets are available from Health and Safety Executive (HSE) Books (tel: 01787 881165, fax: 01787 313995). Ask for a publications price list (free) which lists all the titles. You can also get a ‘menu’ of leaflets via Autofax (see below) and by contacting HSE’s Infoline service (also see below).

Autofax
You can obtain a ‘menu’ of basic HSE leaflet texts by Autofax by dialling 0839 06 06 06 on your fax machine. (The service returns a fax sheet to you automatically). There are about 45-50 items in this list, each one of which has its own unique autofax number. This is a quick way of obtaining the kind of free leaflet information which HSE puts out via HSE Books or the HSE Enquiry Point (see below). The service is charged at 39p per minute at off-peak periods and at 49p per minute at peak periods.

HSE’s Infoline Service
General information on health and safety matters can be obtained by contacting the HSE’s Infoline Service on (0541 545 500). This service operates from 8.30 am to 5.00 p.m. Monday to Friday inclusive. Calls are charged at national rate. Trained call handling staff will help with a wide range of enquiries and will provide advice on publications that can be obtained via HSE Books (see below). A queuing system operates and calls are answered in rotation. Faxed enquiries should be sent to the HSE’s Information Centre at Broad Lane in Sheffield on 0114 289 2333.

HSE’s Website
Much useful information about health and safety can also be accessed via HSE’s website www.open.gov.uk/hse/hsehome.htm It contains lists and texts of HSE free leaflets. information about HSE’s objectives and how to contact them; recent press releases and research; current initiatives; as well as information about a wide variety of workplace hazards and industry sectors.

HSE/Local Authority Offices
Advice about specific health and safety issues can be obtained from local offices of HSE or your Local Authority (depending on which is the enforcing authority for your kind of business). Look for the telephone number in your local telephone directory (under Health and Safety Executive or the name of your Local Authority).

HSE Priced Publications
These can be obtained from HSE Books, PO Box 1999, Sudbury, Suffolk CO10 6FS (tel: 01787 881165; fax: 01787 313995), from local branches of Dillons, Rymans or any good book sellers. Send for HSE’s publications list for details of HSE publications in print.

HSELine
HSELine is a computer database of bibliographic references to published documents on health and safety at work. It contains over 150,000 references and 12,000 additions are made each year.
