What RoSPA can do for your company......

Where We Fit In
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents in Europe’s largest voluntary safety organisation. It covers not only safety at work, but home safety, road safety, product safety, water and leisure safety and safety education. Its purpose... ‘is to save lives and reduce injuries.’

Over the last 80 years RoSPA has been a major voice in the UK occupational safety and health system.

Becoming a RoSPA Member
By becoming ‘occupational members' of the Society, companies signal their commitment to promote health and safety at work. They also gain access to a wide range of products and services to help them meet their health and safety responsibilities. ‘Occupational’ membership is open to all companies and employing organisations as well as other organisations connected with industry and commerce.

RoSPA Activities
In the occupational safety field the Society has received many awards for excellence: for its training programmes; its films; and its safety journal ‘Occupational Safety and Health’ (OSH). It is advised by its National Occupational Safety and Health Committee which is made up of senior health and safety professionals as well as representatives of key organisations in the health and safety system.

RoSPA is involved in many major events in the UK including the international Health and Safety Expo event and RoSPA Congress at the National Exhibition Centre (NEC) in Birmingham, a similar event in September in Scotland as well as the RoSPA National Safety Awards Scheme. These awards are continuing to grow in importance as a means of recognising excellence and achievement in health and safety management.

Occupational Membership Benefits
As soon as companies enrol as members of RoSPA they receive the following:-

  • a certificate of RoSPA membership;
  • RoSPA’s catalogue;
  • the monthly journal, ‘OSH’;
  • a monthly update service, ‘OSH Bulletin’;
  • free use of RoSPA’s extensive information services (for example, statistical information and telephone access to a technical advice during office hours);
  • tickets to attend RoSPA’s annual congress at the NEC.

Member companies also receive discounts on most of the products, services and schemes listed below:-

  • comprehensive health and safety training programmes (run either in-house or at RoSPA in Birmingham and/or Edinburgh);
  • posters, publications, signs and labels;
  • health and safety films and videos (for hire or purchase);
  • driver services (for example, defensive and advanced driver training);
  • safety awards (gold, silver, bronze and special).

Health and Safety Auditing
In addition to these services, RoSPA offers a unique health and safety auditing system, ‘Quality Safety Audit’ (QSA), which assesses the effectiveness of health and safety management and provides a robust framework for promoting continuing improvement. It can be tailored specifically to meet the needs of individual companies. A further service, ‘RoSPA Health and Safety Review’(HSR), is available to meet the needs of smaller organisations. [For more information about our auditing, visit our Occupational Consultancy pages]

Local Health and Safety Groups
Companies which become members of the Society are also encouraged to support and participate in the work of RoSPA’s voluntary Occupational Health and Safety Groups of which there are about eighty spread throughout the UK (see Sheet 10). The Groups provide a meeting place for briefing and discussion amongst staff from participating companies as well as a focus for networking to help other local businesses.
