Confined Spaces Awareness one-day in-company course

A confined space is an area which is substantially enclosed (though not always entirely) and is one where serious injury can occur from hazardous substances or conditions within the confined space or near to the space (e.g. lack of oxygen).

A number of people are killed or seriously injured in the UK each year in confined spaces. These incidents occur across a wide range of industries, from those involving complicated machinery through to simple storage solutions. Health and safety training will enable employees working in confined spaces to get the job done safely.

Introduction:
Course objectives and administrative details.

Scope of the problem:

Facts and figures regarding accidents in confined spaces
The consequences of failure.

Health and safety law:

Overview of common and statutory obligations
Discussion of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated regulations
Particular attention to Confined Spaces Regulations 1997 and their relationship to other regulations.

Definitions
Duties
Risk assessment
Preventing the need for entry
Safe working in confined spaces
Emergency procedure
Plant and equipment.

Practical exercise:
The course includes a short exercise to practise principles of risk assessment and controls.

Feedback and conclusion:
Feedback on the practical exercise, final discussions and questions.
