Health and Safety Essentials one-day in-company course

The way a firm approaches health and safety speaks volumes about its overall values and professionalism, and a good record on accident prevention and health are increasingly seen as conferring a competitive advantage. Ensuring that all employees in an organisation have a basic knowledge of health and safety issues is an important way of fulfilling your duty of care to your employees.

RoSPA's in-company occupational safety training courses enable you to reach a large number of employees at low cost and with little disruption to your everyday activities.

Here is a brief summary of the course content:

Introduction:
Course objectives and administrative details.

Principles of accident prevention:
A look at some definitions and the reasons for preventing accidents in the workplace.

Risk assessment
A look at the requirement of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations for general risk assessment. Particular attention will be paid to identifying hazards and risk controls.

Hazards - general:
A look at commonly-occurring workplace hazards such as work equipment, manual handling, electricity, fire, chemicals and substances, noise at work.

Improving health and safety performance:
A look at management systems, with particular attention to HSG65, and the relationship between this guidance and the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work Act and the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations. Particular attention will be paid to organisational factors, the provision of information and health and safety monitoring.

Health and safety management systems:
An outline of the main principles of health and safety management, including numerous references to HSE Guidance "Successful Health and Safety Management". Particular attention will be paid to health and safety policy documents.

Legal requirements:

  • A discussion of the main differences between common law and statute law and their relationship to civil law
  • A look at the procedure for civil claims for compensation and defences against such claims
  • An understanding of the requirements of significant sections of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Health and safety monitoring:
An introduction to the main proactive techniques that can be used to promote effective levels of health and safety in the workplace, including safety audits, surveys, inspections, tours and sampling.

Accident causation and reporting:

  • A look at the loss causation model and the differences between immediate and basic causes
  • The requirements for reporting accidents, industrial diseases and dangerous occurrences.

Workplace-specific hazards:
A look at the hazards specific to the client’s workplace or activities.
