Managing Stress & Violence one-day in-company course
Stress and violence at work is a major issue, and tackling it is part of an organisation's corporate social responsibility.
Well-designed, organised and managed work helps to maintain and promote individual health and wellbeing, but where there has been insufficient attention to job design, work organisation and management the benefits and assets associated with "good work" could be lost. One common result is work-related stress.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) defines work-related violence as "any incident in which a person is abused, threatened or assaulted in circumstances relating to their work." This can include verbal abuse or threats as well as physical attacks.
It is important for managers to understand the causes and effects of stress and violence on employees from a moral and a business point of view - sickness absence and staff turnover will decrease. RoSPA's in-company health and safety training will enable managers to identify and deal with the causes of workplace stress and violence.
Here is a brief summary of the course content:
Overall aims:
On completion of this course delegates will understand:
- The definitions of stress and violence
- How to identify potential causes of stress and violence in the workplace
- Typical symptoms of stress
- The process of risk assessment for stress and violence
- The various hazard control and risk reduction methods available to minimise stress and violence in the workplace.
Who should attend?
This occupational health and safety training course has been developed to introduce delegates to the importance of managing stress and violence in the workplace. It is suitable for any individual within an organisation with management responsibility for other employees' work. It will be particularly useful for those managers with responsibility for setting policy and for supervisors and safety representatives with responsibility for raising awareness of health and safety. By raising awareness of stress and violence and introducing practical risk controls the potential for stress and violence-related injury and illness may be reduced.
Pre-course preparation:
Delegates should consider how their organisation is currently addressing stress and violence related issues and bring any associated documentation to the course.
Course content:
- The impact of stress and violence
- Defining stress and violence
- What are the risks?
- What are the controls?
- Group exercise to produce an organisational action plan.
Qualification and certification:
All delegates who successfully complete the course in full will be awarded a RoSPA Certificate of Training.
Maximum number of delegates: 16
