Manual Handling & Postural Awareness one-day in-company course

Back injuries can affect all people, in all job roles and all industry sectors. Many are irreversible and can result in significant periods of absenteeism, costing both employers and employees dearly.

The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992 (as amended) set no specific requirements for lifting and handling, such as weight limits.

The ergonomic approach to moving and handling shows clearly that such requirements are based on too simple a view of the problem and may lead to incorrect conclusions. Instead, an ergonomic assessment based on a range of relevant factors is used to determine the risk of injury and point the way to remedial action. RoSPA's manual handling safety training course will provide a good grounding in safe moving and handling techniques, as well as an understanding of the risks associated with such activities.

Here is a brief summary of the course content:

Aims and objectives

On completion of this occupational health and safety training course, delegates will be able to:

  • Outline the hazards and risks associated with manual handling activities
  • Outline measures to reduce the risks
  • Demonstrate application of good posture and efficient movement principles in a range of scenarios.
Movement tracking device

Movement tracking device

This course now incorporates a movement tracking device, which is a motion-sensor, which enhances delegates learning experience.

The movement tracking device is a small clip on device, which is worn on the belt of delegates to detect, monitor and record back motion thereby identifying posture related issues and risks.

Who is the course intended for?

All staff.

Pre-course preparation

A significant percentage of the course involves practical work and delegates should not attend if they are pregnant or suffering from any pain or injury that is likely to cause discomfort.

Delegates should be appropriately dressed in comfortable clothing and footwear.
