Every working day in Great Britain at least one person is killed and more than 6,000 are injured at work. Every year three quarters of a million people take time off work because of what they regard as a work-related illness. About 30million work days are lost as a result.

Accidents and ill health are costly to workers and their families. They can also hurt companies because, in addition to the costs of personal injuries, they may incur far greater costs from damage to property or equipment, and lost production.

This flagship occupational safety training course, IOSH Managing Safely, from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) provides managers and supervisors with an understanding of safety management systems, hazard identification and control.

Who should attend the IOSH Managing Safely course?

Managers and supervisors from all industry sectors who require a broad-based knowledge of health and safety and safe systems of work.

What are the learning outcomes?

  • A good grounding for managers and supervisors to get up to speed with the practical actions they need to handle health and safety in their teams
  • Upon successful completion of the assessments delegates will be awarded an IOSH Managing Safely certificate

Course objectives:
The aim of the IOSH Managing Safely course is to provide delegates with sufficient knowledge to be able to complete the practical and written assessments at the end of the course, and to enable delegates to manage practical health and safety issues in the workplace.

On completion of the course delegates should be able to carry out practical risk assessments and identify the key legal requirements for health and safety.

Who should attend?
The safety training course is intended for line managers requiring a broad-based knowledge of health and safety and safe systems of work.

It is also suitable for those who do not wish to progress to the level of professional qualification, but would benefit from attending an accredited health and safety management course.

An awareness of health and safety issues would be an advantage but is not essential.

The practical assessment element of the IOSH Managing Safely course must be completed in the delegate’s workplace and submitted within two weeks of completing the course.

Course content:

  • Principles of accident prevention
  • Common and statute law
  • Health and safety management systems
  • Risk assessment - techniques and control measures
  • Workplace hazards*
  • Fire, electricity, COSHH, noise, work equipment*

  • Audit and review.

*The "hazards" sections may be tailored to suit clients’ needs for in-company courses.

Qualification
Delegates attending and successfully completing both the practical and written assessments will be awarded a certificate from the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).
