BTEC accreditation has been gained for RoSPA's Manual Handling course. As a result the new accreditation means RoSPA's Manual Handling Trainers Course is now a recognised levelled qualification equivalent to A-level standard.

Delivered by an experienced trainer with both health and safety and teaching qualifications, this Level 3 course provides delegates with the knowledge and skills to deliver effective manual handling training.

Who should attend?

Managers, supervisors, instructors and training officers, safety professionals and those with responsibility for training others in manual handling techniques, with previous training experience.

Aims of the course

  • To develop knowledge of the rationale behind managing handling risks in the workplace
  • To develop the learner's knowledge of the structure and function of the spine, causes of back pain and basic understanding of biomechanics of the spine to provide the underpinning knowledge for the practical aspect of manual handling
  • Skills to translate theory into practices of efficient movement and biomechanical principles by the application to manual handling activities
  • Develop training skills in manual handling to enable delegates to teach/mentor/coach induction and mandatory training that is bespoke to your organisation based on current best practice.

  • An underpinning knowledge of up-to-date manual handling principles and practices
  • Practical advice on manual handling training
  • Certification as a BTEC Level 3 Manual Handling Trainer

Course duration and assessment

The course will be delivered via flexible distance learning and face to face training. All delegates will need to submit a final assessment based on their own organisation in order to receive the BTEC Level qualification.

On successful completion of the practical and paperless assessments delegates will be awarded a BTEC Manual Handling Trainers certificate, valid for three years.

BACK-TRACK™

This course now incorporates a BACK-TRACK™ device, which is a motion-sensor, which enhances delegates learning experience.

The BACK-TRACK™ device is a small clip on device, which is worn on the belt of delegates to detect, monitor and record back motion thereby identifying posture related issues and risks.

Course objectives:

This accredited manual handling course has been designed with the aim of developing a confident and motivated, professionally qualified Manual handling trainer.

On completion delegates should be able to:

Deliver bespoke manual handling training to the workforce based on a task analysis that aligns with current best practice.

Underpinned by knowledge and skills of:

  • Manual handling Regulations 1992 and associated legislation
  • Reasons for managing manual handling risks within the workplace
  • Principles of manual handling risk assessment
  • Structure and function of the spine
  • Risk factors for back pain
  • Basic spinal biomechanics
  • Application of efficient movement principles to routine loads, non-routine loads, pushing and pulling and team handling
  • Teaching and mentoring skills that facilitate the learning and development of the workforce in relation to manual handling
  • The importance of a manual trainer maintaining continuing professional development.

Course Structure and Assessment:

This course has adopted a blended learning approach and combines face-to-face instruction with electronic self- directed learning - to deliver improved costs and educational benefits that connect learning to the workplace and assists the learner to develop practice that demonstrates creativity, initiative and adaptability when delivering manual handling to the workforce.

Learners will be assessed against assessment criteria through submission of assessment activities and learning environment practical observations.

Who should attend?

Managers, supervisors, Safety Advisors or any individual who has responsibility to deliver manual handling training to the work force.

Course Content:

This course consists of four units each unit is 10 hours including learner assessment activities

  • Unit 1 - Theory of Manual Handling
  • Unit 2 - Musculoskeletal awareness and biomechanics
  • Unit 3 - Efficient movement principles In practice
  • Unit 4 - Teaching and training skills to deliver manual handling

Qualification:

Delegates who successfully meet the assessment criteria for all the units will be awarded. BTEC level 3 in Manual Handling Trainers.
