It is the first time that BTEC accreditation has been gained for a Safer People Handling course. As a result the new accreditation means RoSPA's Safer People Handling Trainers Course is now the only one of its kind in the country with a recognised levelled qualification equivalent to a Certificate of Higher Education.

Here, the emphasis is on developing consistency of care for residents and clients and the psychological wellbeing of people handling carers. By applying skills and methods taught here, organisations will benefit from more motivated staff as well as improved functional mobility of clients.

Who should attend?

Managers, supervisors, and those responsible for educating others in the moving and handling of people within the health or social care sector. Experience in moving and handling people is essential.

Aims of the course

  • To provide delegates with knowledge and skills to move individuals in a safe and dignified way
  • To recognise emergency situations and plan for the manual handling pertaining to the emergency situation
  • The skills to evidence base your safer people handling practice and make you aware of the implications of use in practice
  • The knowledge and skills of moving a person safely in a passive lift hoist linked to legislation and best practice guidance
  • To teach induction and mandatory training that is bespoke to their organisation based on current best practice and aligned with regulatory legislation.

Course duration and assessment

The course will be delivered via flexible distance learning and face to face training. All delegates will need to submit a final assessment based on their own organisation in order to receive the BTEC Level qualification.

On successful completion of the practical and paperless assessments delegates will be awarded a BTEC Safer People Handling Trainers certificate, valid for three years.

Course objectives

This accredited safer people handler’s trainer’s course has been designed with the aim of developing a confident and motivated, professionally qualified safer people handling trainer, who promotes the movement of people in a safe dignified way and encourages their functional mobility.

On completion learner should be able to:

Deliver bespoke safer people manual handling training to the workforce based on a task analysis that aligns with current best practice that is evidenced based.

Underpinned by the knowledge and skills of:

  • Manual handling Regulations 1992 and associated health and safety legislation such as PUWER 1998 and LOLER 1998
  • Welfare, regulatory and Human rights legislation and a balanced approach to managing manual handling risks in a person centred environment
  • The principles of risk assessment in a person centred environment
  • Structure and function of the spine
  • Risk factors for back pain
  • Basic spinal biomechanics
  • Application of efficient movement principles to the movement of people with different levels of mobility
  • Safe use of handling equipment and hoists
  • Teaching and mentoring skills that facilitate the learning and development of the workforce in relation to safer people handling
  • The importance of maintaining continuing professional development

Course Structure and Assessment

This course has adopted a blended learning approach and combines face-to-face instruction with electronic self-directed learning - to deliver improved costs and educational benefits that connect learning to the workplace and assists the learner to develop practice that demonstrates creativity, initiative and adaptability when delivering safer people handling to the workforce

Learners will be assessed against assessment criteria through submission of assessment activities and learning environment practical observations.

Any individual who has responsibility to deliver safer people training to the work force in a person centred environment.

Course Content

This course consists of four units

  • Unit 1 - Theory of Manual Handling practices, including other Health and safety legislation, Welfare, Regulatory and Human rights legislation
  • Unit 2 - Musculoskeletal awareness and biomechanics
  • Unit 3 - Evidence based practice. Efficient movement principles In practice. Chair mobility, bed mobility, hoisting skills, emergency handling situations
  • Unit 4 - Teaching and training skills to deliver safer people handling


Delegates who successfully meet the assessment criteria for all the units will be awarded a BTEC level 4 in safer people handling training which is valid for three years.

Delegates will be required to attend and successfully complete a re-qualification course prior to its expiry.
