Safer People Handling Trainers
Few people realise that back pain causes more hours of suffering than all other causes put together. Of course, some pains are more intense - but they are usually of shorter duration. The problem with back pain is that though the pain from an injured back can be eased, it can rarely be cured. So, regrettably, back pain is often for life.
The key to safer people handling is not only an awareness of handling techniques and the use of equipment, but also an understanding of how moving and handling is part of health and safety for everyone - carer, patient and client - and how these fit into the wider context of risk management. The moving and handling of people is a practical science, employing similar principles to those used in everyday manual handling.
RoSPA’s five-day people handling course utilises the Welsh Passport Scheme as the model for the techniques taught, the Institute of Occupational Medicine’s model of the principles to be applied and references recognised literature such as “The Guide to the Handling of Patients” by National Back Exchange and “The Handbook of Transfers” by Arjo for the techniques taught.
Throughout the course delegates learn about human movement patterns and how to apply these to assist in transfers. Delegates develop skills in both active and passive transfers using a variety of small handling aids, as well as hands-on techniques. They will leave the course with a “tool box” of knowledge and skills which may be applied on return to the workplace.
The benefits to both carer and service user can be almost immediate with this flexible, leading edge approach.
This occupational safety train the trainer course has been specially designed to teach those with responsibility for educating others in the moving and handling of people within the health or social care sector and education sector. Here, the emphasis is on developing consistency of care for residents and clients and the psychological wellbeing of people-handling carers. By applying skills and methods taught here, organisations will benefit from more motivated staff as well as improved functional mobility of clients, thus reducing the strain on the handlers involved
Movement tracking device
This course now incorporates a movement tracking device, which is a motion-sensor, which enhances delegates learning experience.
The movement tracking device is a small clip on device, which is worn on the belt of delegates to detect, monitor and record back motion thereby identifying posture related issues and risks.
