A picture of an abrasive wheel in operation.
The Abrasive Wheel Instructors Training Course is one of RoSPA's Train the Trainer courses.

The risk of breakage is inherent in every abrasive wheel. If the number of breakages, and therefore accidents, is to be kept low, the initial care exercised in the design, manufacture and testing by machine makers must be combined with the adoption of safety measures by the users. Accident statistics indicate that nearly half of all accidents involving abrasive wheels occur because of an unsafe system of work or operator error.

With regards to abrasive wheels, PUWER 98 (The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998) requires, among other things, that all machinery is suitable for its intended use and is properly maintained. All employees, including those using, mounting and managing the operation of abrasive wheels, should be fully informed and properly trained in their safe use.

Employers have a duty of care to ensure that all employees are adequately trained and capable of carrying out the tasks assigned to them. The Abrasive Wheel Instructors course helps employers meet their legal duties, as a schedule of training is a legal requirement for all those who mount abrasive wheels. Practical demonstrations and exercises are at the core of this course.

This "train the trainer" occupational safety training course teaches delegates how to instruct colleagues in the safe use of abrasive wheels. Delegates will learn how to set training objectives, plan for training and decide what training aids to use.
