Asbestos Awareness
Asbestos is the single biggest cause of work-related deaths in the UK.
Asbestos fibres are always present in the environment in the UK, so people are exposed to very low levels. However, a key factor in the risk of developing an asbestos-related disease is the total number of fibres inhaled. Working on or near damaged asbestos-containing materials and breathing in high levels of asbestos fibres, which may be many hundreds of times that of environmental levels, could increase the chance of getting an asbestos-related disease.
When asbestos fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases which are responsible for around 4,000 deaths a year. The four main diseases caused by asbestos are: mesothelioma (which is always fatal); lung cancer (almost always fatal); asbestosis (not always fatal, but can be very debilitating); and diffuse pleural thickening (not fatal).
Remember, these diseases will not affect you immediately, but later on in life - so it is necessary to protect yourself or your employees now to guard against an asbestos-related disease in the future. It is also important to remember that smokers who are also exposed to asbestos fibres are at a much greater risk of developing lung cancer.
This occupational health and safety training course enables those responsible for the building, repair and maintenance of commercial properties and facilities management to identify and deal with asbestos and meet their legal duty to manage the risks.
